I recommend Microlinx Free Bookmark Manager and browser add on toolbar at: http://www.microlinx.com
This web based app lets you bookmark sites with two clicks of your mouse, just click, drag and click to drop into place on your own personal start page...like netvibes, but much more useful. Also include RSS feeds, UWA widgets a cool Most Recent & Most Popular Public Links panel to see what others are links to...great way to get off Facebook and rediscover web surfing.
I have to agree that at this point WOT is a collection of opinions, and as such I'm finding it less and less relevant to how I conduct myself on the internet.
I was initially really excited about the tool, but I'm finding that if I actually took the advice of the ratings, I would never get to any of the more interesting political opinions people are sharing online. For example, while I would give a site of the "Hitler fan club" a rating of dangerous without the slightest bit of hesitation, that fan club's members appear to be using WOT too, and are rating the sites of disabled activists or feminists just as dangerous...
If there was transparency that sometimes what is being rated is based on political opinions, I wouldn't object so much. But rarely have I found that the ratings are backed up with helpful information. I would much prefer that every rating required some deeper explanation. Lacking such reasoning I've found this tool to not even remotely meet its potential.
The post is incorrect it is not a Shortcut that you must creat, but a new folder and paste the name admin.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}, and it works
I'm sure someone wrote this already, but I don't have time to read them all! A better blogging system needs to be developed so you don't have to read tons of unrelated stuff.
This just doesn't work. I tried to create a shortcut and got "The name ... is not valid" error on my Windows 7 Ultimate system
Under 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate, "All Control Panel Items", the default if you choose to have Control Panel on the Desktop, only gives a small fraction of the icons available via the "magic" menu.

In Windows XP, Vista and 7, press "Windows Key"+R, type shell:Common Administrative Tools into the box and click OK. This will get you a list of common administrative tools.
In Vista and 7, press "Windows Key"+R, copy shell:::{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} and paste it into the box, click OK. This will get you a list of all tasks (as described in the article by Rik). Works on 32-bit. (64-bit needs some tweaks in some cases).
The above code is one of the Class IDs in the Registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID
This post is a little confusing. I tried doing this as a shortcut, but it failed. After reading another blog I created a new folder with this name and it worked.
Yes of course that's true, and some of the software being produced nowadays is absolutely fantastic compared to even a couple of years ago.
I just set up quite a few SSD machines, and the results are incredible! Machine response times and performance are brilliant with the right set up.
I like 7, it's a massive improvement on Vista for instance, ( which I think was actually a big step backwards for Microsoft), but to be honest there are actually not that many users who really need the kind of computing power that a good 64 bit system can bring on the right machine setup, and there is not enough suitable software for them anyway.
That too will inevitably change. Be interesting to see what the first "service packs" for 7 bring, and also how the software develops. We live in interesting times for a technician! :)
Discovering things that can be done with Windows, or any OS for that matter, is a difficult and time consuming matter. Had Microsoft known everything about post NT Windows I doubt they would have bought SysInternals.
As to 'magic', that's in the science. This will, in due course, turn around and shake things up :)
Rik Mayell - Category Editor, Best Free Windows 7 / Vista 64 bit Software
There are some "hidden features" which can be called but they are mostly covered by various "tweak tips" and utilities, XP has been on the market for quite a while now.
Everything is pretty well documented.
My own main personal machine is an XP machine, and I still see no real reason for me to change. I use many machines at customers in the firm etc, and I also get to talk to a lot of technicians, so I get lots of tips on various things. This stuff is bread and butter to a good technician. Installing free software that makes things easier or better is a real plus for a customer, not because it is free ( although that too is important for many!), but because it makes their lives easier and more productive. Many things are a great deal harder for "average" users, they have no real training, they don't spend day after day researching and solving problems, and they are often very poorly informed.
There aren't really any "Magic" tricks. This for 7 one just happens to be very impressive because 7 is new, and this trick utilises a programmers back door to give better access. Microsoft refuse to comment on it! :)
This 'GodCode' should work on all Windows 7 systems and shouldn't be used with any other version of Windows. Use of a CLSID entry point from one version of Windows, in this case 7, is likely to 'undo' you if used in another.
Rik Mayell - Category Editor, Best Free Windows 7 / Vista 64 bit software
It will work on some systems, as will some other "GodCodes", but it will crash others. It may even cause system damage.
The code given has worked on every 7 system I have tried, and quite a few people now use it routinely, simply because it is extremely convenient.
If you don't know what it does on any given system, then I would advise you not to use it! The title of this article also specifies Windows 7. If you use it somewhere else and it doesn't work, or causes problems, then that is not only not surprising, but also rather silly!
Has anyone else noticed a quality degradation when downloading videos from youtube with Video Download Helper? Whenever I download an HD video clip off youtube and watch it, I get a VHS quality stream.
I haven't tried it on other sites yet, but can anyone else confirm this?
My favorites are Lastpass for password management.
Xmarks for bookmark management.
They both work on Windows and Linux and automatically sync the information between all your computers.
I recommend some of my addons (I use around 36 addons)
- Must have: AdblockPlus, NoScript (already mentioned)
TabMixPlus: full control over tabs
WebOfTrust: protect against frauds, fake logins...
AllInOne Sidebar: a very convenient tool
- Should have: (depending on one's needs)
Resurrect Pages: when pages are blocked or deleted but you still want them.
MasterPasswordTimeout: fix a problem in the way FF handles "password asking".
GooglePreview: a thumbnail for each search result.
Fireshot: capture webpages as pics (very good even when facing movies, flashs), I previously used ScreenGrab but it can't deal with media.
Personally I don't think RedirectRemover is a must-have.
HOWEVER its good point is also its own enemy. Why? It depends on majority opinions; and in a community how many techs, how many savvy users and how many newbies are there?
--In the end, WOT becomes a collection of newbies' opinions.--
So it can only detect obvious viruses. If the site has a well-hidden code that is out of reach of normal users, WOT is out of luck.
As for adblocking, I agree that AdBlock Plus is excellent. And might I add CustomizeGoogle? Once added, you can specify all types of ad-content and click-tracking to block.
I'm less pleased with NoScript, as it takes some time to whitelist the content you don't wish to block.
flash_disinfector.exe http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe for autorun virus protection. Haven't used it though.
Or you can use NTFS file system on your pen drive and remove write permissions.
NTFS though wears out flash drives quicker than usual.
I recommend Calibre, it's a free software program that allows tag editing and can handle most of the formats you have stated. It also can convert some formats.
You can try this one: http://www.mnemosyne-proj.org/. It seems to have everything you are looking for. The printing capabilities are a bit weak, but it'll do what you want at a basic level. Also, it's portable.
Hi, I use a 120 Gb hard disk, I not able to format it through any means!... I tried doing everything I could! is there any software that I could use to get it formatted?
What? I didn't see that on the Microsoft website, but it is on the technobuzz.net website. Besides being a supremely annoying pain in the a**, the ones I actually tried don't work on Vista x64...
I downloaded FLVs from a random Web site (not on the list of media sites supported) using Firefox 3.0.2 without problems--just clicked the drop-down arrow next to the animated icon, and it found the FLV file embedded in the HTML without an issue. Great resource.
I've just used it a few times (without issues) in Firefox 3.0.2. on a Web site not listed under supported sites. To download an FLV from wherever, go to the page with the video you want and click the little drop-down arrow beside the animated Video Download Helper icon on the Firefox toolbar. You should see the file name of the FLV you're viewing and can click on it to download. If you click the Video Download Helper icon itself, you'll see the list of supported media sites VDH is supposed to work with (none of which I've tried).

Folks as impressive as this is you can access this "magic" menu by simply typing "All Control Panel Items" in the address bar of the control panel.
Hope this makes things a bit simpler

Just go to control panel and type anything in search box, will get same thing...

As the title points out this is for Windows 7 and works for both 32 and 64 bit versions.
Directing a call to a Windows 7 specific CLSID under Vista is at best risky.
Rik Mayell - Category Editor, Best Free Windows 7 / Vista 64 bit Software
This has been rumored to work in Vista on a 32 bit (x86) operating system, but in a 64 bit Vista operating system it will crash.
