The Best Free Security List in the World ?

One of our editors, Antti Koponen, has personally compiled a huge list of free security software which he has modestly titled "Probably the Best Free Security List in the World"

Whether it is the "best" I  cannot say but it is extraordinarily comprehensive and includes many products I didn't even know existed.

Please note that this is just a list not a set of recommendations. However for anyone who has an interest in security it is a fabulous resource.

you r fine. install free version of a-squared for periodical scanning. Avira is best to keep you away from serious infections at present.

It is so scary that we have to have all of these programs because of the great need for security and self protection in this day and age.

Thanks for the postings.

Say, what's the word on the Ashampoo free firewall? It never seems to come up in lists like this.

by Anonymous on 13. June 2009 - 23:32  (23806)

It has poor reputation of outbound protection.

I used Comodo for a few months, and then decided to uninstall it (June 10, 2009). That's when my problem started. I could not understand why on my laptop I could not join my Webinar or PING or Tracert any sites at all. Yet on my desktop computer, I had no problem. So I spent $50 and took my laptop to the experts (a Microsoft Certified Engineer, and more). After doing extensive diagnostics, guess what showed up? Comodo! Comodo did not provide a proper Uninstall file and their main program had left a small file somewhere in the registry! The experts deleted the small Comodo file and now everything works fine. :) Hope this helps.

A note for all (and many of you may have experienced this)-

For ease of digestion I have broken this down into two sections.....

Section 1:

1. Uninstallers seldom uninstall all the bits and pieces.
2. This leads to "problems".
3. Our friends at M$ are the worst...in short don't use ADD / Remove
Programs (perhaps an intentional design flaw to increase the registry
size, slow down your computer and join the "must need a new one" club
(when, in reality, any Pentium 4 machine with at least a 2.4htz
processor and 1 gb of ram will stream movies and play 99& of the games
out there...don't get me started on this subject by the way).
4. Most (almost all) 3rd party apps also suffer the same problem...bits and
pieces left (it's the last thing the programmer does...the least
important...and is usually accompanied with, "when are you ever going to
get that product to market"...a real productivity incentive booster.
5. Revo Uninstaller is significantly better than either of the above.

Section 2:

1. Security programs, when uninstalled in my experience (and it's logical since they are by design invasive) can be the worst. Norton ranks at the top
for leaving problems....(hmmm...maybe designed to get you to reinstall and elimiante the "malware")...Sunbelt can be a problem as well (although I love the product), Trend Micro did it to me once and even (so hard to believe) Microsoft Security Essentials.

2. So........if you uninstall one of these it is strongly recommended you do so with Revo Uninstaller...(it first uninstalls with the applications uninstaller and then looks for bits and pieces). The only issue here is that Revo does not look at all the locations that some....not all....security products hide things (well, not from you or me but actually from Malware so they don't get disabled vis-a-vi the back door).

Hope this helps.....copy and paste to other sites if you like...spreading the word can generate some pressure on those who create "our" problems. Steve
