iTunes replacement

I recently tried to merge my music collection with my girlfriend's and managed to do a very poor job losing some music on the way.

Amongst the subsequent foul language I did something I thought I'd never do - contemplated downloading iTunes!

Shaking my head, first I tried here and then further afield for a free alternative, and I think I found it - MediaMonkey. So far I've been really impressed.

MediaMonkey is simply great for managing music; and if you do not like its player, it will even try and integrate winamp playback (and also supports many Winamp plugins). However media management is its forte and it is going to be difficult for any other software to better it on that front. Neither iTunes nor WMP can even equal its media organising capabilites... from multiple tagging, playback and virtual discs to CD ripping, burning, and auto-tagging (from amazon.com), it's got everything!

However there are a few annoying shortcomings...

  1. Resources. Once you've used Winamp (classic), you tend to get used to the low resource usage (which is why I prefer the Winamp classic interface over the modern). MediaMonkey uses far more resources than you'd expect from music player. I prefer playing music in the background while I play my (resource-hungry) games. So it's best left as a music organiser rather than a player. But then you ask yourself, "how can I use one software for media management and the other for media playback? I wish there was a software that combined the playback capabilities of Winamp and the organising power of MediaMonkey!" - I guess one can only wish and wait.
  2. File format support. This great media management tool does not support many file and playlist formats and worst of all cannot play windows media streaming audio, which some internet radio stations prefer. So it boils down to the same issue - better media organiser than player!

If you're willing to compromise a little on media management features, then I'd recommend Winamp (in its classic avatar), as it's media library, although extremely basic compared to MediaMonkey, has nevertheless evolved over time and will get the job done.

The hunt for the best media software is still on! I've read about Songbird in the post dated 06/21/2008 on this forum. I'm going to check it out now. Let's hope it stands up to the Mozilla reputation.

I'd love to see a comparison between some of these music library organizers (WMP11, iTunes, aTunes, jajuk, and Media Monkey)! "The Best WMP Alternative" is not quite what I'm looking for.

I'd like to throw Mozilla's Songbird (http://getsongbird.com) out there also. Though its still early in development (just reached version 0.6), it shows great promise and is really worth a look.

If porting music to and fro from your ipod is a criteria, i recommend floola

Folks, I did a search here and much to my surprise could find neither

atunes
nor jajuk (Wikipedia page with link to sourceforge - project page)

The Jajuk home page (http://www.jajuk.info) was unavailable...

Media Monkey is a good choice too, but - mind you - I have very simple requirements and am easily pleased and satisfied ;)

I just checked out the Media Monkey web site and I have to admit that it does appear to do a great job of managing music. But my G3 iPod nano also does video and photos. I have been looking since last year for a program that handles those as well. So far WinAmp does MP3s and Video, but not photos. Lately I have found an open source program called Media Chest that claims it will handle photos and videos as well as MP3s. I haven't had time to try it. Has anyone else heard of it??

Totally agree. Have been using it for about 3 years with no problem on a relatively large collection, involving both online and offline disks.
