Program that logs and reports the actions of setup programs

Years ago I obtained the shareware product Picture Taker, which made large snapshot files of the registry and hard drive before and after installing software, compared them and reported the changes that had occurred. Microsoft once had a program, instaler.exe, that came with a windows server resource kit and I believe behaved in a similar fashion. Both seem to have vanished. I believe I have seen mention of programs that logged such changes as they were made, by hooking into system calls. I have been unable to locate any such programs of recent vintage, i.e. suitable for use on Windows XP and Vista, that do this. Not looking for a sandbox program or a drive imaging program so I can revert to pre-setup system state; I have those. Rather, I want to know what a setup program added, changed and deleted to my registry and my file system. Suggestions, anyone? Thanks.

Try Regshot. It is open source. With this standalone program, you can take a snapshot of the registry before and after installation and compare the two snapshots also.

Possibly ZSoft Uninstaller might suit. See here:
