Best Free Business Intelligence Software (in development)
Business Intelligence software provides the means to gather, analyze, and visualize data in way that allows for the intelligent and efficient use of that data. The applications that lie within the realm of Business Intelligence can vary from software that is used to integrate data from multiple sources to software that is used to present multiple forms of data visualization in one centralized location.
- Information Discovery – provides for the search and navigation of data in order to gain insight
- Information Query / Reporting – allows for the querying of data and report generation
- Information Visualization – provides the ability to visualize data graphically for ease of understanding
- Information Delivery – scheduling and publishing information for others to consume
- Business Intelligence Platform - bringing all of the above into a single integrated platform
Within this category, I plan to review all free software that relates to the aforementioned aspects of Business Intelligence.

thank you very very much
Coy Yonce, I would like to add to your post and add an interesting company that deals with data integration and data quality.
So far I have been a user of all kinds of open source programs, therefore "free" and quickly downloadable. Searching for a new tool a few months ago, I came across a company that deals with data integration and quality, this company being Talend http://www.talend.com/ . I have been using the company's software, mainly Talend Open Profiler, for a few months and with my needs, I feel totally satisfied.
What I really enjoy about it is its ease of use, fastness to operate and free download. Talend has an active website with a community able to solve problems and a very dynamic R&D team to quickly implement new features and fix bugs.
You can download Talend Open Profiler from http://www.talend.com/download.php.
Talend Open Studio: http://www.talend.com/products-data-integration/talend-open-studio.php
Hope this helps!
Thanks. I will take a look at this software and include it in the next phase where I will be including data quality products.
Any process modelling tools ?
Not much.
EAStudio has a community edition, which could probably do decent modelling but out of 4 installations in different machines only one did work, others had problems with java and they had latest jres installed and working OK. No support and even google mysteriously tells nothing... This belongs to the category expensive version probably works, community version worth of nothing.
Then there is Open Model Sphere. Lots of stuff for data structure modelling. Also model selction for business process modelling, but could not find a possibility for even "swimming lanes" !?!
If no-one suggest something that works, I suggest You use "normal" tools like PowerPoint or free counterparts of it. Remember that it is likely that your customers have never even heard about EAStudios and Open Model Spheres and they are NOT going to install several copies of it just because You as an external consultant ask them to.
for ETL :
http://www.talend.com --open studio
pentaho have Kettle http://kettle.pentaho.org
Both products are quite good - Talend is quite useful as it is a code generator (either Java or Perl)
for complete BI suites you have
www.jaspersoft.com
www.spagobi.org
and pentaho
jaspersoft actually uses a rebadged version of talend for the etl product in their suite
for data profiling
talend have a free dataprofiler
and so do a company called sqlpower ( they actually have a number of excellent open source data tools)
http://www.sqlpower.ca/page/MatchMaker
Thanks. Good list. I will include the ones that I missed.
This is the only one I know of:
http://www.pentaho.com/
I'd be very interested to see what you'd be putting up here. Can't wait.
