I have to agree with Andy.
I've tried dozens of players (not all free either) but I've found that JetAudio is streets ahead in sound quality.
After using the free version for a couple of years I've now bought the Pro version and it's well worth paying for but for most people the free one's more than adequate.
Slightly off topic perhaps but while you're at it "Audacity" is a useful free audio editing download too.
If its audio I like jetaudio it does a nice job ripping CDs too. one of the few I know that will merge tracks into a singe file while riping.
