I downloaded SP3 via Windows update onto a well-maintained HP Pavilion desktop and it resulted in the PC being non-functional. I had to go in via Safe Mode and remove the update. Since then SP3 has come my way two more times due to auto-update. Both times was left with PC that wouldn't work, had to go in via Safe Mode and remove the update. I will wait until a CD-ROM is available from MS. Hopefully by then it will work. One thing I finally learned after having 4 or 5 HP's in our house: never again. My next PC I'm going to build myself. Been gathering components and looking forward to the learning curve.
Thank you for your input.
Many of us self-build, and you'll probably find the learning curve isn't as daunting as you might first think, especially if you select well-matched components. If you can possibly afford it, get a decent case ... it can make a huge difference but is sometimes neglected.
I have a question...is installing SP3 something we should do... is it necessary?
Any info about SP 3 would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
I'm afraid that it has to be your decision. It's never "necessary" to upgrade an O/S, if you're satisfied that your PC is performing satisfactorily. No one seems to suggest that you'll find any performance benefit from installing SP3. All you can really do is google "XP sp3" and consider the information you find. Here's one article that points to one downside:

And this is Microsoft's less than enticing advice:

I had to abort the online SP3 update -- download kept pausing for ages so I aborted it.
I opted instead for the "network administrators" option which means you have to download a much larger file rather than the smaller one relevant to your particular PC. But at least this larger download didn't keep stopping and I was able to install it. It also means I still have the download to store on a CD for future use.
Download the XP SP3 full ISO from here:

It's 544MB and took 20 minutes on my 4MB DSL connection. I never bother with online updates or any of that stuff, I want the full SP on disc where I can see it. Then you can use it again and again, offline or whatever. In 3 year's time you've still got it.

tech support recommends download of win sp3. however, I am unable to download the program from microsofts download site.
I have a legitimate win xp pro and all other downloads function OK
Any suggestions how to overcome this
Get SP3 from Windows update. If you have a fully patched SP2 the download will also be much smaller
