GarageBand-type simple music-making loop program for Windows?

The subject pretty much says it all. My teenage son wants a Windows (XP, Vista -- pretty good horsepower) program that he can use to make music the way so many Mac users do with Garageband (which I realize is not a free program).

It should be straightforward and make obtaining and integrating new music loops simple.

I've seen a few in searching other freeware sites, but have not idea if they are any good. Any suggestions from personal experience would be most helpful. Thanks

I suggest that your son try Sony Acid or Sound Forge all are freeware and found online. Good luck!

Sorry, if this is not what you're really looking for: I recognize a MAC but don't know, what it's good for.

Here is a program I just discovered the other day:

tuxguitar

and I have started to use it. I mainly want to print guitar notes (and tab) but you can really do more with it. Have a look...
