Introduction
For database applications there seems to be always a very high learning curve before you are able to use it for your purposes. With much less effort card file oriented database applications are often more than enough to fulfill your needs.
Discussion

AZZ CardfileAZZ Cardfile is a wonderful free-form database with a myriad of uses. It's a direct (and much enhanced) replacement for Microsoft's Cardfile (which they abandoned many years ago).

There is however, one important caveat. Strictly speaking this is shareware, not freeware. On the other hand, the free version never expires (just unobtrusively nags if you don't register). Your data is also inherently safe as it allows backup in a variety of formats such as .txt, .html, .xml, and .rtf. I'd recommend the Version 4 beta version to anybody; it's rock-solid and doesn't even nag.

The site features a large number of pre-made card collections, but they do vary in the quality of information they present.

You can also apply for a free lifetime license here: http://www.azzcardfile.com/license.html

Can one run a search by particular fields in this program ?

This articles is actually very good it will be usefull thanks.

It doesn't really have "fields" in the sense that I think you mean. It does have full text search.

I'll have to use this to keep track of my celebrity photo database.

If you use AZZ you will have to buy the shareware ver. to use photos.
I've used this FREEWARE program - http://www.artplus.hr/adapps/eng/easynote.htm - for years, nothing can touch it. It is completely free-form, add photos, links.etc..
