Free wallpaper changer that changes the wallpaper at Windows startup and then quits

I know there are plenty of (free) wallpaper changers.
But I want one that does what it should do and then just quits.
I already have plenty of apps and tools running permanently and consuming precious resources. I don't want another one.
I just want a wall paper changer with this specs:

Standard wallpaper changer settings:

  • It lets me define one or several directories where it looks for wallpaper files (PNG, JPG, ...) [including subdirectories]
  • It lets me define if I want it streched, centered, tiled,...
  • It lets me define if I want the files being used randomly, one by one, ...

What I especially want, but didn't find yet:

  • It starts up with windows, sets the next picture file as the wallpaper and then quits

try Wallpaper Cycler from www.nuonsoft.com. They have a free version that does what you want.

I got several e-mails of the developer of Wallpaper Cycler Lite. (version 3.5.0.97 at this moment)
The cause of the crashes on my machine seemed to be the tool FileBox eXtender.
The first working solution the developer suggested was to add Wallpaper Cycler Lite's executable to the exceptions list of FileBox eXtender.
The second working one was to quit Wallpaper Cycler Lite, rename its dll file "dwmapi.dll" to "_dwmapi.dll_" and restart it.
The best one (the real fix of this problem) will be available in the next release of Wallpaper Cycler Lite.

This free wallpaper changer application is
* very good and has many options
* has no limitations on the number of wallpapers it can handle
* is apparently made by a very friendly and co-operating developer
so for me Wallpaper Cycler 3 Lite from NuonSoft is a top recommendation and its gonna stay on my machine(s)!

A no whistles-nor-bells alternative is Wallpaper Shifter 7

I'm wanted to test this one out, since the free version of Wallmaster is OK but only supports 50 different wallpapers.
Unfortunately on my Windows XP SP3 machine Wallpaper Cycler (free version) crashes whenever I try to start it.
I let the program send the crash report to the developer and I'm waiting for a response.
To be continued...

This is the program i use to change Wallpapers: http://www.wallpaperchanger.de/ This is just in case you want to compare different programs.

I understand what you want Geert and your aspirations are spot on. Who wants yet another another process running in the background?

However I'm not aware of any freebie that does what you want. That's not to say it doesn't exist. Maybe some other site visitors can help.

wallmast
Will do exactly what you want, just set the options to quit once it's done its work, it has plenty of other options
but I purely use it to load a new image at startup and then quit.
A link to one of the many download sites http://www.tropicalwares.net/download/wallmast.exe.

Hi mike,
It's decided: WallMaster does what I needed so, it's a keeper. Thanks again.

Hi Mike,
That looks good indeed. I'm gonna try it immediately. Time will tell if it's gonna stay on my PC.
Thank you very much for the tip.
Geert

Btw Gizmo, I like the clean layout of this site VERY much.
