Use this thread to debate the software mentioned in the Best Free Software Update Monitor article.

I have done RadarSync test and my conclusions are:
It is not possible to put RadarSync in full window mode. I was trying to update one driver (Intel(R) Q963/Q965 PCI Express Root Port - 2991). After 'Create Restoring Point' nothing happens. Only black window without any effect. There is advertisement pop-up too. It recognizes badly next version of my software: 1. CCleaner 2. foobar2000 3. Foxit Reader 4. Pidgin 5. Spybot Search and Destroy There is strange entry: 'File shredder formerly integrated into spybot'. There is not possibility to see list of installed programs. My note final: 0 over 5. |

I vote for SUMo, because it can detect the most software out of my system (believe me, I have tons of them, all with one use or another). Update Notifier is great as well, being faster, nicer GUI etc., but ultimately, SUMo wins with its ability to detect (although it detected more than needed, especially after I configured the scanner to In-Depth). Both do have their fair share of problems though, like the uncommon, but still existent false positives, but they're currently two of the best.
As for the others, they're either unknown, unessential, or just a plain waste of disk space + time + energy. |

Thanks for your thoughts J.L.
If you go to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\cspa and open the InstalledApps.xml file, you can see which software Update Notifier detects, but does not show. If you have any software installed that you feel should be on CleanSofts' database, you can contact them (click on the Contact Us link on UDN) and request them to add it (include a link to the software's homepage and/or its download page). They typically reply within a few hours. If you want to remove the unnecessary executables SUMo finds during a scan, select them and click on the Ignore button. They will then not show up again, even after another in-depth scan.

In my opinion at the moment Update Notifier is better than SUMo and it is not only my opinion, just look for User Rating on Softpedia:
1. SUMo: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...ous/SUMo.shtml 2. Update Notifier: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...Notifier.shtml. |

@FrankO: Yeah I did know about SUMo's ignore button, I wouldn't have preferred it without that (For example, I use 3 all-in-one pc maintenance programs ..., the overall number of detection is almost 4x what's left after I ignored entries).
As for the info on Update Notifier, thanks for that, I'll think about contacting them later, because I also have 3 RSS feeds. Overall, all 5 of these updating services detected most, if not all, of the software I have. |
