I'm not a huge Windows Secret fan any longer. However, I'm still a subscriber, though I basically just peruse the newsletter.
But, I found this article fascinating. I guess the reason I liked it so much is that he's saying what I've been thinking (and saying a little bit) about Windows 7. Mainly, that you don't really need to add much to it, including freeware. You don't need a separate defragger; you don't need a separate backup program or imaging software. I'm curious as to others' reactions to the article: http://windowssecrets.com/top-story/...t-need-part-1/

I would agree with most of what is said there.
It's strange that as Microsoft continues to develop systems needing little else to function what they are actually creating is what Linux has been providing for years

Well yes, but you still need to purchase the O.S License of Microsoft. Maybe it's a way for them giving something back by saying, hey you can do more with our O.S now just as a Ubuntu version can out of the box. Just an example. Maybe Windows 8 will include Office...This could be a fundamental step depending on pricing...

That would be nice but unlikely if the figures in this article are accurate.

Agreed. They've certainly ironed out a lot of the security issues with firewall/AV and browser development. Including more functionality with Office would be a great asset.

It has been. Quite some netbooks preinstalled with Win7 Starter are also preinstalled with MSOffice Starter (consists of Word and Excel, free, ad supported but not obtrusive.), probably a counter measure to a low-price range of Linux netbooks in the market.

That's like a marketing scheme from Microsoft. The user that knows less about Technology will go with the netbook with Windows starter or Linux netbook with the same pricing? Hey I can get a netbook with Windows starter on fully licensed.
