Default Problems with Windows 7 SP1 on systems that also have Linux

If you are running Linux and Windows 7 on the same PC, you may have problems with service pack 1 for Windows 7. Ed Bott gives a fix at http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/quick...on-errors/3040

There appears to be quite a few problems being reported with this update.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...22(WS.10).aspx

Older versions of MSE need to be brought up to date.
Samsung Galaxy S phone drivers may have problems with SP1
Some users reported very long install times (> 1hr. but not all that unusual for a service pack)
Chrome 10 and 11 have issues according to some tweets
Word 2003 VBA
Slower boot times with SP1 then without
Some reports of download issues due to overloaded servers
EVGA Precision Utility 2.0.2 (Graphics card stats program liked by gamers)
MSI Afterburner
Some issues with Bitlocker are reported. But no confirmation at this point and it may also be due to entering the wrong password on reboot (you have to reboot a couple times in certain situations)

This upgdate does not HAVE to be installed immediately. Probably worth waiting a few weeks to see just how many problems exist and if they are fixable.

Microsoft has an uninstall tool for SP1 if you find that it has hit you in the 'you know what'.

Some of the comments on that article you linked to are hilarious. I reproduce them below. Best laugh I had all day for sure.

Once again proving why you should not use linux, it will corrupt your Microsoft Windows installation. The better fix is to remove linux completely then you won't have this error at all when installing SP1. I installed it and didn't run into any issues. I'm betting Linus Torvalds purposely did this in a failed attempt to make Microsoft Windows look bad.

Who needs 3rd rate communist software that will break your machine, linux should be drowned in a sack along with other unwanted animals.

As soon as I installed w7 sp1 my corns and in-growing toenails instantly felt better, just another example of the healing power of windows.

@Rubberduck Rabidson

Oddly enough, when I installed w7 sp2, my Cancer went into remission, my Scoliosis permanently corrected itself, and the testicle I lost in a freak accident as a 4 year old grew back ...

Thank you Microsoft, you are all saviors ...

N.B. None of this can be proven in a court of law ... even with Microsofts lawyers

@Loverock Davidson It's a windows disk check problem.

So how is this Linux's fault?

Oh wait, its not.

How's that WP7 coming for you?

" I can't wait to get one."

I laughed out loud as well

However I think this may be the root of the problem:

@Loverock Trollsson

Windows mucking up Linux on dual boot systems is old news. Windows assumes only one system is on the computer. Windows has never been friendly to other OS installations.

The usual routine is to restart Linux using alternate media and rerun the bootloader after the Windows update. The world is not sure if it is deliberate sabotage by your employer, or just plain stupidity by the Microsoft techs. Personally, I never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.
