Thanks Peter, Anupam and Midnight Cowboy,
I do have some poor posting habits which I'll be trying to fix from now on. ![]() Not to mention my awful grammar, I have a tendency to say I too often. (no nothing to do with ego, just poor grammar) I'm here to have fun and not to attack or provoke anyone, even though, I may be doing exactly that. ![]() So there are no hard feelings, I apologize again to Mike and anyone else who I offended. I like this forum and the people posting on it, so I'd like to hang around and I truely hope Mike hangs around also. I guess now is the time to let people know a little about who I am... (I hate this kind of info, It's like a resume) My name is Rick and I am an applications programmer primarily C# and VB on the .NET framework (yes windows) but also C++, PL/SQL, SQL, LDL+, Perl, and Shell scripts on the Solaris and HP-UX. I do administrate a few Windows Development Servers (yes Windows again) and use multiple DBMS (database management systems). My past experience is with embedded micro-controllers (8051 family) and hardware. Please don't hold any of the above technical xxxxx against me,I just a regular guy.

You can install safety devices, keys, passwords etc...... But yet have I found anything fool proof. Linux by design does, by its very nature prohibits unauthorized access to critical functions. But I am living proof that a person can destroy a linux OS with a couple of clicks. All be it with root access. Of course we know its easy to do in windows. Windows has outstanding support for hardware. Linux does not. I like Linux. But I still rely on windows. That's my reality. As a caveat, I would love to see linux on par with windows and I don't know how that can be done. PS: I found the debate outstanding. It speaks to the essence and core issues of the two operating systems. If someone is rattled by the somewhat heated rhetoric then maybe they should take a break and get a slurpie. I for one have just learned a great deal, Thanks debtboy and Mike Cheers Wdhpr ________________ my two cents

You can keep your "nice discussions" ... whatever they are. Debate & argument are what this board is about, and perhaps the only thing that will keep us moving forward.

I only come here to read and occasionlly post a thought that I may fart out. My posting about an old machine was to show new computer people like myself if we have a problem there are any number of ways out. Cleaning up the hard way showed me a bit about the way things work. I'm a member at several forums with this name and a few with a different one. I got my first computer 3 years ago. I use one at my part time job but I am a gandydancer by profession, a railroad track worker to the unknowing. Age is a factor only when it comes to retiring and in a little over 2 years that is what I'm going to do. At that time I may start taking classes to really learn computers or maybe I'll just start doing stained glass again. Since I am no kind of comp-pro some clean up was necessary to get to the system restore, I think. Maybe typing classes will be first cause it has taken me entirely to long to type this, over 15 minutes. It seems everyone has left thread friendly? maybe? people don't have kiss to make up a handshake is fine. I hope to read more posts from debtboy and Mike because this is my computer classes for now. Goodnight All. It is 10:30p now and 5a cames mighty fast at my age.

There is one point here that most of you seem to have missed and also the reason why I saw nothing here to go "infractious" over (yet!).
When people respond like this its usually because they feel a sense of "ownership" about the place they are posting in. In male terms it's like a territorial thing. This is good because it also implies a sense of community and this is the one big area where Gizmo's scores over a lot of other forums. We certainly allow more "this is better than that" stuff here than is tolerated in other places but Peter is certainly right about this discussion which has contributed a lot to the content here. And debtboy there is no need or reason at all to feel that the quality of your posting is in any way "poor". Regard this and other forums as a "stew". Individually the ingredients are pretty bland but once combined and cooked the result is very different. As with all good stews they always taste better the day after so reflection and giving the contents an occasional stir is also beneficial! Anupam is usually the man on "point" with the other mods in the main body of the forum patrol and I'm usually the rear guard. Certainly there was no engagement this time and everyone's back in base, weapons secured. ![]() Thank you all for your contributions.
