Just out of curiosity....have you been able to boot into that CD on other computers? Is it possible that this "magic disk" is not a bootable disk?

DOH: Looks like J.L and I crossed paths on this one!!

On your Virtual Machine Setting, what is the CD/DVD Device Status and Connection?

How did you install XP in the first place?

@freedog96150: What do you mean by DOH?

Edit:
@Av_Crazy: Also, are you sure you've set the boot order correctly? The CD-ROM must be above the Hard Drive.

Another oops. Meant DOH! with the exclamation mark. I typed a response out and then got sidetracked. I clicked submit and when the page refreshed, I saw that you had just posted a very similar reply. I did a quick edit and added that last line...that's all.

Do you have this disk as an ISO file as well? Maybe try to load the ISO instead of trying to load from the actual CD. How many drives? If you have multiple CD/DVD drives, maybe you need to set the actual drive instead of using the "auto detect" mode. I am running out of ideas. Have you tried over at VMWare forums?

Glad it finally worked out. It was pretty much my last suggestions before claiming a complete stump.
