With the talk of physically cleaning the inside of you computer one should also consider the cleaning of the hard disc, this is something I do every 9 months or so when my computer seems to slow down some and it never fails to restore my speed.
My first stop this time around was with my Maxtor backup just incase something goes wrong, did a complete backup so I had everything if I needed a restore. Next I set up a boot time scan with avast Free to have a complete scan and see if there are any virus’s, malware or file problems. No virus’s or malware but some problems in the system restore files, so I turn off the system restore reboot turn system restore back on and create a new restore point. I also make a new restore point with Spyware Blaster just to have a second restore point. I do another reboot just to make sure star up is good. One of the first attacks is to delete, delete and delete some more. I start with the e-mail accounts first, the in box then the deleted file. Then it is on to the programs, although I delete very few of these most times. Then I go thru my photos and music very few of these go either but it is always good to look at them. Next it’s Ccleaner running only the cleaner and removing what ever it finds. On to the second longest part of this operation, Revo Uninstaller, junk files cleaner under optimization first, then on to the Tracks Cleaners, browsers, Microsoft Office cleaner, Windows cleaner, and lastly the Evidence Remover which writes over deleted files with gibberish. ER took almost 1 hour and 45 minutes to run today but I think it was worth it with my end product a computer that is running a lot smoother than the previous 3 weeks. Not done quite yet, the very last program is to run a defragger, today’s choice was Puran, for a second run on my computer. The first time I ran it, it only took 25 or so minutes to defrag and optimize, almost an hour this time, must have been all the bits of free space created from all the deleting and the ER in Revo, let Puran do an auto shutdown to see how it worked, give a 10 second countdown before shut down takes place, seemed to take a long time to totally shutdown but I wasn’t worried (lol). The real test starting it up, not a lick of problems right thru all the lead screens and on to the login not a bit of hesitation, WinPatrol, avast, and then Outpost Firewall to desktop even faster, programs all opening faster, surfing is faster shut down is better than ever almost like a new one. All added up about 5 and a half hours. Dan |
