I'm embarrassed to say that the personal/commercial use licenses never once occurred to me. Surprising because practically every free version of a program uses the "personal use only" license. Senility is a terrible thing...
Kindest Regards, Kyuzo. |

In furthering my experiments with defragmenters, I've downloaded and tried the free trial for Perfectdisk defragmentation software. I know this is commercial software, but I thought some observations might be helpful in comparison with the freeware defragmenters I've tried:
It was interesting that in trying Perfectdisk, during its analysis the program offers a commentary on the state of the disk which it is defragmenting. I last defragmented the disk Wednesday a week ago (with Puran I'm afraid ). Perfect preliminarily rated the free space optimization excellent, fragmentation percentage of the disk files and free space excellent (I had no idea free space could be fragmented!), and rated the disk "optimized for performance"- a compliment I'd say to Puran's housekeeping but an unusual evaluation considering what occurred next. I decided to use the proprietary Smartplacement optimization strategy as well as the defrag. A grave error. After the program was finished, I ran Ultimate to analyze the disk and to see what exactly had been done. Just like Ultimate's file-splitting strategy, Smartplacement apparently places older, less frequently-used files around the spindle of the disk. Approximately 50% of the files were shuttled to the spindle. As with Ultimate, I could not tell a great deal of performance difference post-optimization. Since I do not plan to purchase this program (it seems like an excellent program, just not my cup of tea), I uninstalled it and have set about replacing the file set to the strategy favored by Puran, Auslogics, SD and others. It's interesting that although Perfectdisk rated the disk "optimized for performance", it nevertheless split the file set to edge/spindle. Perhaps Smartplacement automatically does this when selected. The reason why I bring this up is for the benefit of those who are contemplating using Perfect Disk. If their file placement system is to your liking, but you balk at the $29-39 US price after the trial is deactivated, you might find equal benefit using the freeware version of Ultimate Disk. It can place files either at the edge of the disk a la Puran, Auslogics, SD or can split the file set to a ratio of your choosing. Forgive the longwindedness. Regards, Kyuzo. |
