a disk read error occurred on startup

new dell (2mos.) studio 1537 laptop;windows will not open and displays the following message upon startup:" a disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to start" Upon doing this it repeats;same message against a dark grey background.Help

If it's new, I really would recommend returning it and demanding a new machine. You should certainly contact where you bought it from, and local Dell customer support.
This is such a major fault it's totally unacceptable, and even if you persuade it to start, your likely to just enter an endless morass of problems.

If you do want to try something, press <F8> (possibly several times) during boot; are any of those options useful?
