I've tried CleanMem, and it definitely works for me. It has saved me 200-300 mb of my memory when idle

Been using CleanMem for nearly a year. I believe it takes a very clever approach to memory enhancement.

Cheers

I don't see how it can. It runs for less than a second (milliseconds actually) every 30 minutes by default. It runs, then stops. It does not run resident all the time. (You can change how often it runs actually.)

However, I do vaguely recall someone complaining that this was a problem for him. Again, I don't see how this would be possible.

I suggest you install it and see. It's very easy to uninstall if it would cause a problem.

Why isn't there any further discussion on this topic since Jul 2009? Anyway, let me share my input and findings on the web.

Quote:
Memory boosters, optimizers, and washers --- whatever the name, they all do the same thing: free up physical RAM. They accomplish this by forcing RAM to be 'paged out'. That means, the memory is taken from RAM and put into the page file, which exists on the hard drive. Does this make your computer run faster? The short answer is No. In fact, just the opposite is usually the case.

Clean, Defrag and Boost Your RAM With SnakeOil Memory Optimizer
Just take a quick look at any download site, and you'll find hundreds of products that claim to "optimize RAM to make your computer run faster". Give me a break! Almost all of these products do the same things: they call a Windows API function that forces applications to write out their memory to the pagefile, or they allocate and then deallocate a ton of memory quickly so that Windows will be forced to page everything else. Both of the techniques make it appear that you've suddenly freed up memory, when in reality all you've done is trade in your blazing fast RAM for a much slower hard drive. Once you have to switch back to an application that has been moved to the pagefile, it'll be so slow you'll be likely to go all Office Space on your machine.

Memory Optimizers

I’ve long railed against these things. The only thing that these programs can do is harm real system performance. My advice, stay away from any “memory optimizer” programs. Don’t believe me? How about taking renowned Windows guru Mark Russinovich’s word for it? In his article entitled “The Memory-Optimization Hoax, RAM optimizers make false promises” he lays out the argument better than I ever could. (I can’t reprint the article because of copyright.) His conclusion is that these programs are “fraudware” and he has “yet to see a RAM optimizer that lives up to any of its claims.”…’Nuff said!

However, there's an exception that I know of to this case - the name being CleanMem...and here's the reason why:

CleanMem: RAM/memory cleaner that actually works

Apart from that, most other memory optimizers are really nothing more than 'snake oil'.

Excellent post which mirrors my own opinion but as you say this discussion sort of died out here long ago

Thing is though your missing one of the main points. A lot of people use their computer like a fruit machine so the more things they can get flashing away in the tray the better they like it. In this respect memory craptometers are ideal because the figures change all the time and if you install something like Taskbar Shuffle then you can drag it next to your multiple installs of Speedfan and have a whole pile of them ticking round

Haha

It's great fun when someone hands you their PC with the request "can you speed it up a bit"

...........and when it finally manages to boot up, it gives you the impression that you're sat at the controls of an alien spaceship that has just been crash landed into an amusement arcade

Funny but true lol On the other side, I'm one of those who don't like such stuffs...I consider them more of a distraction. Only really-really-really useful programs that needs to run in the background deserves a tray icon on my PC.

I used to write a lot of Samurize and Rainmeter configs but just to keep my brain occupied. I never had them plastered all over my desktop, and now I don't have time anyway. The only icons I have on my desktop are for PC, docs, prog files and recycle bin. Everything else launches from SE-TrayMenu and MagicFormation. I have the BRK World Time for Rainmeter so I can see what it is where Gizmo and Anupam are, NetMeter and a TimeLeft clock skin - that's it

What's the point of having wallpaper if all you can see of it is in the corners?
