These are the key aspects announced so far from the offical blog Introducing the Google Chrome OS.

Quote:
Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.
Another interesting article to read:
Why Google Chrome OS will turn GNU/Linux into a desktop winner

A slightly different view here but I'm in agreement that the potential for the market overall is very exciting. Even if Google do fail for whatever reasons they will still bring issues and components to the market place which will ultimately benefit the development of other systems, even Windows!

Google OS seems to be good . But it will not be as successful as Windows, unless they bring a good user interface and good amount of alternative applications . Cloud based systems will never be a competitor for desktop OS , at least for 10 years .

Thanks for the hint. BTW, source code only, plus a disclosure of some directions.

As the official Google Blog says:

Quote:
First, it's all about the web. All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications. This means users do not have to deal with installing, managing and updating programs.

Second, because all apps live within the browser, there are significant benefits to security. Unlike traditional operating systems, Chrome OS doesn't trust the applications you run. Each app is contained within a security sandbox making it harder for malware and viruses to infect your computer. Furthermore, Chrome OS barely trusts itself. Every time you restart your computer the operating system verifies the integrity of its code.
An OS designed only for Cloud Computing? Isn't it Chrome OS = Cloud OS

Can it be popular, I just wonder

It's interesting to read it, instead of trying it.

As you can see, it is all in the cloud. All the applications you see on the app page bring up different webpages, and everything you do takes place within the browser.
This "Cloud OS" wouldn't let us do anything if we're off-line
If so, I wouldn't be interested in it at all. I'd need an OS which works on-line and off-line, stay with Ubuntu. I'm happy with it.

You just echoed my thoughts there.

The article was interesting to read for me too... am not interested in trying that out.

I am not interested in trying out the Google OS either.

The concept of cloud computing does not interest me. First, the system has to be connected to the internet always... and can't work offline. Further, I wouldn't trust any cloud with my data being over there, rather than being on my hard disk, on my system.

I don't know if Google OS is going to be that popular. Apart from the above points... they say that they are targeting the OS for notebooks. So, this OS is more of use to the people who are always on the go, and do most of their work online. Then, the OS would not support all hardware... that is also another disadvantage.

But well, you never know what this might turn into... since its open source now, and open to the community... and you can expect surprises from Google always.

Anyone tried ChromeShell?

Quote:
ChromeShell is a non-google affiliated replacement shell for windows that strips your desktop down to what you really need; the browser. The shell transforms your normal windows desktop into something a kin to Google’s unreleased Operating System, Chrome OS.

ChromeShell gets from standby to my email in less than 3 seconds on my quadcore machine and around 32 seconds from cold boot!

The shell is currently in BETA (however testing has shown it to be quite stable). In the future, a nicer installation method will be employed and many extra features (to mimic those available to you in Chrome OS) will be implemented.
