Default Alternative to Microsoft Operating System

Every two years or so we get turned over once again by Microsoft, the paint is not yet dry on Vista and we are now looking at Win7.When can we have other options?

You mean alternatives to MS, such as Linux?
Also (but you need to read all the comments):

Cool I like the idea of a free windows NT system.

Frankly, I am going to wait till reactOs reaches the beta stage before I try it.

Watch out microsoft you are going to get competition !

I can't wait till microsoft loses their monopoly.

Default Mandriva

I used to run Mandrake(now called Mandriva) on my Pentium III machine. I see Mandriva still has the single CD install. It's great if you have broadband using a standard TCP/IP network card. It comes up, recognizes the network, and puts enough stuff on your HD for a working Linux setup. Then it pops up libraries so you can pick other packages you want to install. It downloads and installs them right then. When you boot off the HD you have the entire system will all your selected packages set up. Very nicely implemented.

Hi,

I'm one of the failed migrants to Linux in that I managed to get Ubuntu set up but didn't really like it. I wanted PC Linux OS and since the 2009 came out I want it even more but nobody here seems to be able to set up my net connection (or doesn't want to) with anything other than Ubuntu! I have no choice but to use a Sony Ericsson USB broadband modem. I've looked at Mandriva, bit heavy now, but I would use it in preference to Ubuntu. Do you know if the latest Mandriva would load drivers from the free CD version to enable me to get onto the net?

I've tried the forums, also for OpenSuse and others but the answer's been either the same or non existent.

Hey midnightcowboy

Have you looked at Mepis 8.0 I believe is has a good network support system. So far its the only linux distro that plays nice with my router.

Short answer is no I haven't looked at Mepis, but I will do and thanks for the suggestion.

In truth, despite having a PhD and another degree I've always been lingually dyslexic and being English and living in Brazil poses a severe problem in that I need to use a Portuguese based OS. The guy who came to the house to sort out my Ubuntu connection wrote a script for it like he was translating half of the Bible so I knew then I would have no chance to work this out for myself unless it was configurable in English, and then only maybe!

What I need to do is to concentrate more effort in this direction as I seem to spend half of my available free time babysitting my collection of Windows security apps, none of which I would have to bother with if I was able to use Linux. Mind you, sure fire way to become a security expert is to live with Windows!

I will look at Mepis and see!

Thanks

MC

Sorry to hear about your condition. However it appears that people that loose a limb or even eyesight can find ways to adapt and overcome. I believe it also speaks to the character of the person. Your work on windows security is first class. Fight the good fight and give mepis a look when you get the chance.

Cheers
