Default VMware player

I'm considering running XP pro within vmware to test the effectiveness of certain security builds but I wanted to know if they let you roll back to pre-infected states or do you need to make images of it instead.

VMware player does not allow you to make snapshots. You would need one of VMware's paid products. Please consider VirtualBox (Vbox) https://www.virtualbox.org instead. Vbox allows you to make snapshots and then "roll" back to a pristine state.

You can just copy the virtual machine folders, although that`s slower and more resource intensive.
