I found this the other day. It allows the the scanning of a file before its download and it uses VirusTotal's services. I like the idea of being able to check out certain files especially new software from vendors with little to no reputation. Which brings to mind some of the stuff offered from GAOTD.
![]() It comes as a browser addon and can be downloaded from http://www.virustotal.com/advanced.html#browser-addons. I just noticed it also scans the website. A nice backup to WOT Last edited by wdhpr; 23. Oct 2011 at 07:22 PM. |

Is the VTzilla addon compatible with FF 7.0.1?
Installed the addon for a Sandboxed FF 7.0.1 and it appears to work as claimed. Call me paranoid, but I'm always cautious with addons the haven't been vetted through the Mozilla process.

I do not know very much about this software because I just installed the addon early today so I'm also learning what it will do.
What I do know is it adds a toolbar to the browser and it has two options "Search Virus Total" and "Scan current site" there is also a search box. It also has "Scan with VirusTotal" in the browsers download menu. It seems to be working as advertised with Firefox 3.6.23 on Linux. For more information there is a review over at Ashraf's website. I just wanted to let the crowd over here at Gizmo's to know about it so they can convey their thoughts about it as well. ![]() The website list VTzilla as a plugin but also has extensions for IE and Crome Last edited by wdhpr; 23. i tried this a few months ago when i first heard of it. my impression of it back then was that it was lacking.
It didn't work as I had expected, it scanned after the download and not before so you wouldn't know if you were downloading a virus until after the fact. For this reason alone I didn't keep the plugin and continued to use their uploader that I could rightclick->sendto and it would do the same. Since if the vtzilla had to upload the file back up to Virustotal, I saw no point in having firefox do that for me. all of this may have changed since then, i havent tried it since edit: saw the review, seems like they did change it a little so it might be more useful, but with plugins like Wot/ and DNS I don't need another link scanner :S |

Again, this product has been reviewed in http://www.techsupportalert.com/cont...fety-check.htm. There is nothing remarkable about VTzilla or VTchrominizer (the Chrome addon).

Best Free Internet Safety Check Updated 24. October 2011 - 10:57 by Remah Yes it looks like old news. I thought I made it clear by my second post that I started the thread to invoke comments concerning the addon. I never intended to promote it in anyway. I apologize for taking up space on the forum. Thank you PS: There are few security options available with Linux (because its safer by design) With that I should of placed this thread in the Linux forum. I like the idea of checking Windows files prior to downloading them and then moving them to my Windows directories. Last edited by wdhpr; 24. Oct 2011 at 07:02 PM. |

I'm excited because the new product database will become a good place to check out specific products. At present, we can only do a text search of all of TSA for a specific product. For most categories, we don't mention the products that don't make the cut. So most of us don't check out what's already in the system. The new product database allows us to add all the products we've reviewed even if they're not published in the Quick Selection Guide.
