Default Avira 10.2.0.700

I have installed Avira on one of my hard disks, and trying it out. Its been years since I have used Avira.

As Avira has no web shield, the webpages open quite faster. With Avast, they opened a bit slower. But, I didn't mind that, because it feels safe with a web shield. The Avast web shield has saved me many a times from bad sites. So, I don't mind a little compromise with speed.

Now, two things are bothering me with Avira.

First, whenever the system boots, there is quite a delay before that umbrella opens. The cause of the delay is the notification about the safe search toolbar offer. Until that pops up, the umbrella does not open. It is slowing down the boot process too. And it pops up everytime. I did not find anything in the settings about that.

Is there anyway to turn that popup off?

Another thing is that, is there any way to exclude files in Avira? It has caught a few files, which I know are false positives. But, I could not find any option to exclude these files.

I might not stay a long time with Avira, because without the various shields that Avast has, I don't feel particularly safe.

An option would be to use Sandboxie, but that will come later for me.

And anyways, the reason I am using Avira is because of a problem I am having, and I suspected it was Avast. But, the problem still occurred. So, Avast was not the problem. I will be going back to Avast, but I still want to try out Avira for a few days.

Performed an update, it was successful. However, I noticed that the update will occur only once in a day. That is not good.

Scroll down to my post #29.

To exclude files in Avira go to Help>Index>Exceptions

This will then give you 3 options; Guard, Scannner and Webguard and the relevant help to set any exclusions.

Hope this helps!

Anupam, you can change the guard start up mode. You probably have it as it is set when you do a express installation. You can change the guard to start up early by going to add/remove programs and click change. That setting can not be changed using the UI.
I would not worry about the umbrella opening a little late but if that bothers you, do what I suggested and it will take care of it. You might like the guard to start early, for two reasons. One, the umbrella will open early and Two, Avira performs a quick scan of whats running and important files.

Excluding files from the guard and scanner is easy, follow Torres indication and make sure that you do it for both, guard and scanner. About the toolbar screen popup, I understand that it will go away after 3 reboots.

Thanks Torres. Well, I had done the same thing as you did, according to your post. While installing, I had not selected for that option. I am still getting the popup for the safe search toolbar.

About exclusions, I did not find anything in Help. There is no Index. Which version of Avira are you using?

I am using the latest one : 10.2.0.700.

I found the option too. In Configuration, I had to check the checkbox for "Expert mode", and then under the Scanner, and Guard settings, I could see the option to Exclude files.

I had missed noticing that checkbox before.

Thanks Bo. You are right, I had not changed the guard start-up mode. I kept the recommended setting. The reason is that according to it, the startup will get delayed. And that's the point. If I choose the other setting, then the startup gets delayed too, because even if the umbrella opens early, the scanner will perform a quick scan, and that will slow things down.

So, in both cases, the startup is getting delayed.

Running 10.2.0.700.

I forgot to include this: help >contents>then you will see 3 tabs; Contents , Index and Search. Click on Index to find Exceptions which is listed alphabetically in a long list of help titles.

Thanks Torres. I noticed that in the help too, it was not told to select the Expert Mode, because that's when the options for exclusions are shown. And I also think that it was not explained in an easy way. Anyways, I got what I was looking for.

I decided to uninstall avast and install avira just out of curiosity regarding the popup windows and the infamous ask tool bar installation. Started the custom installation and went with the secure start. Right off the bat Private firewall alerted me to askstub installer and I blocked it right off. Once avira was installed then the update started with the avnotify window showing. I fixed that by going into Admin Tools and Local Security Policy, Local Security and made a new Restricted Path Rule for avnotify.exe so now that window won't show when updating anymore. Now for the other toolbar screen, it went away after 3 bootups as Bo says. I also went back into local security and made new restricted path rules for apnstub.exe and apntoolbarinstaller.exe. Lastly, I scheduled my updates to run at 4pm daily and so far Avira has been running very well with a bit slower bootup time than avast but it runs well with sandboxie. I think I might just keep it. Anupam, it just takes a little getting used to as it is a bit different than avast however the choice is yours as to which you prefer.

Thanks wolfstr for checking it out. You are right, it does take time to get used to something. So, I have decided to stick it out a little longer with Avira. So far, its running quite light, and the computer is a little bit more responsive than Avast. The webpages open slightly faster too, and so I am happy that way.

As for the web shield, without which I feel unsafe, I decided to try AVG LinkScanner. Its running along fine alongside Avira... and I do not feel any slowdown in opening webpages too.
