Default OpenDNS (new service)

Users of OpenDNS who haven't seen this yet might find it interesting, and users who aren't using this service yet - why not?... don't you want anti phishing and anti bot-net protection plus a load of other stuff for free?

Talking hot

Thanks MC - That news about the innovative caching system OpenDNS has just started using is certainly a hot find for me.

OpenDNS is a great service all round, I think, which deserves all the publicity it can get.

Ok, for us OpenDNS neophytes, give us a quick tutorial on OpenDNS. Better yet, it sounds like a great idea for an article!

I've submitted a HotFind article on the smart caching service, including a brief summary of the advantages of using OpenDNS and a link to the relevant tutorial.

Please correct any inaccuracies/mistakes or post in the comments. Thanks - Bob

BTW, I just tried to rustle up a helpful HotFind, but please do feel to change, develop or take over this stuff in any way that seems appropriate... MC or whoever... Thanks - Bob

On Moonlightcowgirl's insistence, I've been using OpenDNS for a few days now and have really noticed nothing. Which is good. All things being equal, I'm happy to support an actively developing security company.

ps . . . just kidding about the nick MC

I would love to be using OpenDNS...the new 'SmartCache' feature is even more inducement. Unfortunately, after a recent trial, I experienced some serious latency problems with the service.
I'm nearly certain the noticeable lag is relevant to my location and the locations of existing OpenDNS servers?

Has anyone done any testing regarding ping time with OpenDNS? I am a gamer and have a pretty solid system. I get 80-85 FPS on most games. However, on a lot of internet games, I get horrible ping times. I'm wondering if OpenDNS might help ping times?

I first discovered the OpenDNS site a number of months ago. Then, when there was a bit of a crisis with the DNS system, I decided to use it for protection.

I haven't utilized any of the other protective services, though I did sent information to my home town school, thinking it might be helpful since there are a lot of kids there... And you know how kids are when they get curious.
