Default When Rising is Not So Free

Contrary to what you might have read on other websites, Rising have not suddenly made their whole product range available for free, unless that is you live in China.

I finally managed to make contact with my old friend Arthur at Rising who confirmed that only the antivirus will remain free for international use. Anyone who downloads and installs their other products, including the firewall, and uses same outside of China will find it will convert to a trial version.

Very appreciated your info.

I installed Rising Firewall and, until now, I'm using it "outside of China" and didn't convert to a trial version yet.

So I'm waiting 30 days after initial install.

Thanks again for the info.

I don't live in China, but Rising Internet Security did not change into a trial. No one experienced what your friend states. I think he needs to get his facts straight.

My "friend" (used in the wide term) is Arthur Meng who is the business development director for Rising International. This is an extract from his email:

"And here I need to clarify Rising Antivirus International P/L provides users around the earth paid service with Rising Internet Security, Rising Antivirus, and Rising Firewall software product and, Rising Company also provide individual users Rising Antivirus Free Edition to enjoy a free but professional real-time computer security defense service.

Rising security software, which are designed for China market and different from the software products we publish on www.rising-global.com, have executes freemium policy to users only of China. This policy is only executed for China market in accordance with competition situation of China security market and, will not make any effect to our services which are provided on www.rising-global.com and the software products".

It appears that it can take some time for the Rising servers to identify all installs outside of China and maybe in your case they've missed it altogether. Still the fact remains that these products are only designed to be "free" for the Chinese home market for the reasons as stated by Arthur Meng. Usage as such outside of China may be "possible" in some circumstances but is not something that we as a site would encourage or support.

At the risk of offending anyone, I would take this one step further and say that since the products are not meant to be free outside of China, we should not be using them even if they are not "caught" by their servers.

I meant to convey this message in my last sentence but maybe didn't make it clear enough. Yes, without trying to act as global policeman, using something which knowingly you should not is stealing. I guess part of the confusion is because they offer an English language option.

Rising did not say that this is restricted to China only. In fact, this is the Google translated announcement. Take note of the anytime, anywhere part.

From the translation.

"Rising all the products the company is one of the biggest advantages have completely independent, autonomous intellectual property rights, Chinese users anytime, anywhere with the best information security protection"

Sorry, but Rising have just said exactly that, to me, so unless we assume some attempt by them to undermine me personally I'm accepting what I've been told.

It is also totally illogical to expect that a company with the standing of Rising would not have set up an English language web page to promote this in English speaking countries, instead of expecting millions of users to need Google translate to get at it.

In addition to the quote posted by garth, the only other geographical mention in their statement also relates to China only.

"....will completely change the pattern of the security software market in China."

Can you believe a post has now appeared in the Wilders thread containing links to all the Rising free products listed at Softpedia - which as far as I can tell is all of them

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showp...8&postcount=73

This I saw literally 10 minutes after receiving another email direct from Rising saying "no" to my suggestion that at least they could offer the firewall for free (extract below).

"Thanks for your suggestion. But here I have to say sorry.
In accordance with our company global market strategy, we will not publish
Rising Firewall in freemium policy. Anyway, thank you for your kind
suggestion".

Talk about how to confuse the un-confusable

I did notice though that the Softpedia page link to Rising still goes to a trial version.

Needless to say I have now sent another email back containing these links and requesting further "clarification"
