Post On-Demand Comparative Test Report Released

Quote:
The February 2011 on-demand comparative report has been released. Please read carefully the whole test report (incl. what changed and the appendix report about false alarms). You can find it on our website.

Now if they'd only do Dynamic tests on free versions.

WOW. That's going to give the "Best Free Antivirus Software" reviewer something to look at!

Congratulations to BitDefender and from TSA's point of view AVG.

The high protection number scored by Bit Defender does not really surprises
me but the 5,5 score for usability really makes me wander about this test.
For me, Bit Defender it is the worst antivirus that I ever used or tried out
with respect to usability, maybe things changed in 8 months.

From the review: The "Usability" testing includes the system slow-down caused by the tools and the number of false positives.

Fair enough but probably not what you expected.

BitDefender have a free version of their av but charge for the suite, not unlike antivir, avast and AVG. However I can't tell if it's the same av as used in the suite.

I still think these things are misleading, especially the on-demand tests.

Research suggests that using Norton or ClearCloud DNS automatically removes around 30% of threats before you start to consider an AV. Using IE9 with Trend Micro Browser Guard installed and only entering green WOT sites must then take the percentage well into the high nineties and we still haven't got an AV installed

On this basis, and understanding that nothing will ever get to 100%, I think folks with layered security and safe surfing habits can achieve just as much protection from MSE or the other supposedly lower ranked products as anything else.

Hi MC, I have been toying this last few days with Norton/CC DNS, in your
opinion, for malware protection which one is better.

I would say ClearCloud, because you can submit false positives. Detection wise, they're around the same.

Thats a good point for CCloud. I know comparing this services protection
against malware is like comparing Vipre and Norton antivirus but if I am
going to replace the one from my ISP, I want to replace it with the best.
On my PC, both feel about the same, no changes in speed or CPU usage.
I am leaning toward CCloud.

MC, that research sounds interesting. I'd be interested in reading more on the subject if you could give a link to where you found it.
Cheers.
