This Post is similar to JonathanT's 'What is your security setup?' Thread But i want to focus on Virtual Software such as Returnil, or Time Freeze or even Sandboxie or any others out there. Or do you not use these but prefure to use a Virtual machine and connect to the internet though that?
This is just to see what people use regulary or one more then the other. Or if people avoid using them all together and for what reasons. |

I have installed sandboxie in my system, but use it only when I encounter unknown applications or when I need to test out an application (what kind of toolbars get installed without my permission or the application tries to phone home, etc..).

Sandboxie is an excellent program which I use routinely for browsing the interweb, and frequently for testing unknown software or downloaded files.
I use Virtualbox mainly for trying out various Linux distro's and other bootable discs etc. Of course it could be used for extra safe web surfing but Sandboxie is usually a more convenient way of doing this and almost as secure IMO. |

I have used Sandboxie for only 2 years now on Vista Bus/32 and W7/32. I have been very impressed and pleased with it. I must say that I was somewhat intimidated by it when I first tried to use it. I was not sure what configuration setup to go with and I found the help section very confusing (as a novice user). I have not changed anything from the default setup because of this.
When BufferZone came to my attention (the free 1 yr license giveaway) I decided to give it a go to see if it was more novice friendly. I downloaded it onto my XP system and it was a no brainer to use. Nice GUI with pretty straightforward usage directions. I have been using my XP system more for Linux now (it is dual boot), so I was not giving BufferZone much of a workout there. I downloaded it on W7 and just exited out of Sandboxie while trying it out. It has played havoc with my extensions and bookmarks on Chrome, so much so that I have had to surf outside BF much of the time, defeating the purpose of the product. It has been such an pain in the butt (can I say that here?), that I have gone back to Sandboxie. |

Sandboxie for all browsing except for the time it takes when a plugin or the browser itself has an update, then straight back to sandbox. At work i use sandboxed windows explorer for opening client documents and sometimes use Wondershare TimeFreeze for other stuff. By way of experiment i thought i'd try running my sandboxed FF4 b8 on top of TimeFreeze, and right now my browser is not happy. I'm seeing a lot of "not responding". Experiment over

The only time that I don't use Sandboxie is when its time to do updates.
For testing bona fide programs I prefer to use Time Freeze since some programs will not install well when doing it with Sandboxie. This is so because SBIE will not allow drivers to be installed. The protection given to the user by SBIE is such that it has kept me clean since the first time I use it, not mattering what other applications I use at different times. Convenience, well that also unmatched. SBIE is the only program that I recommend 100%. Bo |
