I have Avira free version on my PC, but I have wondered for some time if I have it set up to get the best from it. Do any of you guys know what the best configuration settings are?
Thanks in anticipation Wekslap |

I have my scanner scanning all files/archives/additional settings all checked and highest heuristics
my guard is almost same settings but medium heuristics... I set scanner to highest because if guard is triggered, I want to know I get everything then I can manually lookup/decide on false positives |

doing so for the scanner. eyeb, you should concentrate on prevention not detection, and by doing it the way you doing it, maybe?, some malicious files might get thru that would have been detected if you had selected high heuristic for the guard.. I am not sure if you are using SBIE(100%), if you are then it does not matter what you choose but taking SBIE out of the picture there's no question on my mind that you would benefit more having the guard on high heuristic. When I had Avira I had guard and scanner on high and selected all files/ archives/additional settings like you did but I would not recommend selecting everything to anybody that is not familiar with his/her computer. Selecting one of those settings gave me 100% of all the detections/FP that I ever got from Avira. Think prevention not detection. Bo |

I choose medium for guard because I'd like to know the alert I'm getting is more real than false positive. The reason I don't care to catch iffy things is because I have other things in place.
With sandboxie I can prevent infections via browser. For installations I use sandboxie/time freeze/jauntepe. And for general monitoring, I use process hacker to alert me of new drivers/processes. While I don't have HIPS, I can see everything that goes on with process hacker that I care about. The only thing I'd miss by not having HIPS is a homepage change and this won't happen since the process changing it will be stopped by me |

positives by the scanner putted me on guard quite often and even though I never quarantine any of them, the Avira scanner on high can cause harm to the wrong user. At the same time, the guard on high heuristic never bothered me and gave me MORE real time protection than on default. Bo |

well part of using medium is when Avira 10 first came out, a positive would start an auto scan so I wanted to cut out the false positives. And I really don't worry about getting anything that I manually download because I know what I'm getting so I'm not expecting anything outside of sandboxie to have a virus

If I may be so presumptious as a mere newcomer to this forum.
If I may say so, the two of you using this thread to score personal points off of each other as to who has the most superior knowledge of Avira and to the relative pros and cons of Sandboxie to assuage your own personal egos has hardly helped me at all with my query, and has more served to confuse me more than anything. I was under the maybe erroneous impression that these forums were here to help out with genuine queries from beginners and relative novices , not as a forum to bicker. I think I have found what I needed here: http://www.drtweak.com/index.php?top....msg540#msg540 Thankyou Wekslap Last edited by wekslap; 21. Dec 2010 at 12:31 AM. |

read it and get a different point of view of how to use Avira. When I exchanged my point of view with him it was for you not for him. If you read my posts on this thread you ll see MY answers to the questions you made on the opening post. If you have another specific question I ll try to be more direct, OK. By the way, the guide that you linked to is very old and it pertains to Avira9. It s obsolete. Bo |
