In terms of what it does and how it's no different to similar applications in that it combines behavioral analysis with heuristic detection and signatures to combat malware. The interesting feature though is that it loads before any other system drivers so is in complete control from the moment you switch on.
The downside of this of course is that if it fails you likely won't be able to boot at all, safe or otherwise. The only real concern I have is that no one is yet confirming just how "free" the final version of this is going to be. If it transforms into another Cloud AV then I shall lose interest just as quickly as I did with that!

Certainly none that I'm aware of as freeware. I'm not sure how close Prevx comes to this definition because my knowledge base doesn't stretch that far, but no doubt someone reading this will step in with some better information.

Prevx Edge has a free trial which is unlimited but does not remove any malware found. And I think DriveSentry also uses blacklisting with heuristics with behavioural blocking? |

Yes, I'm aware of these features but it's the point at which it loads into the system that I was most interested in and as you say, with Prevx it's almost impossible to sift through the hype and confirm the actual features.
The new suite from DriveSentry is due out shortly and it will be interesting to see what they've added or changed. I just hope they haven't gone down the same road as some of the others and stuffed in loads more "features" at the expense of stability.

It's now been a week since I posted requests in various places asking someone from OS to confirm that their software will remain free. Since I've had no response I'm assuming that the intention is to make it commercial once the beta testing phase is completed.
If I hear (eventually) anything to the contrary then I'll update this thread.

Today I (finally) received a response to my last email to Mihail Fradkov at Online Solutions in St. Petersburg.
He tells me that the complete security suite will indeed remain as freeware and have the same protection layers as the commercial version. The only difference will be the ability to auto-create certain types of rule by using their commercial service. This is very good news for anyone looking to try something different although I've asked Mihail if this current beta is really ready for general consumption, or if users should wait for a later release. I'm told that people testing this now are reporting no significant issues but I've seen very little to back this up. Naturally I'll post Mihails next response and will run OSSS myself as soon as he advises that it's ready for general release. My current feeling is that a beta version of any form of mainline security application is maybe a risk too far.

Time will eventually tell how well this new Russian software will score against the opposition. I must say though that their dev team is already leading the way in user communications. There were a few quiet moments on their forum no doubt because there is also considerable interest in this product from China requiring translations into Chinese as well as English. Now, not only do we see the change log for new versions but a statement to support it. They are also not afraid to hold up their hand when something fails to meet expectations. To date the latest crop of new features have been added in a steady stream to minimize possible bugs and make locating those which do arise easier. The latest beta is still not ready for general consumption which is why it doesn't feature in more detail here. For anyone interested in the development of new projects however I would advise watching this one. This to me is how a product should be developed and not "thrown to the lions" for testing in the community. I only hope the end result does justice to the work put in by these guys and doesn't just end up as another "also ran".
