Now criminal elements are targeting PC users en-masse by telephone in addition to the usual popups from rogue sites.

Old scam

....It's possible that it will work well especially with people who are not so tech savvy. Here is a link to the Register article which ran a similar story a few months earlier:

I would say more ongoing as opposed to old with the stats highlighted in the BBC article being as recent as last month.

It is more of an ongoing thing, heard it on the radio this morning and it's in some of the newspapers here. Maybe because it's coming to the time of year when more people use online shopping etc. The more people who are made aware of it the better.
