A Microsoft Security Advisory(2458511)http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...y/2458511.mspx was published on November 3, 2010, that explains a vulnerability in all supported versions of IE. This is a few days late, but better late than never. I don't use IE, and I wouldn't want to after reading this either. Especially if my OS was XP. I quit using IE several years ago, and when I did, the overwhelming majority of any problems that I had with malware...vanished. I don't care how "safe" and hardened IE 9 is when it's released, because that will only last for a short while before it travels back down to the bottom of the pack, if history is any indication that is. IE is the best thing to ever happen to Commercial Security Vendors marketing Anti Spyware products.

The only reason when I use IE is probably a certain app works on IE only. I tried IE tab on FF but it crashed.
Last week I tried to remove an unwanted homepage which "persistently nailed" into IE. Tried reset homepage in IE but had no effect. Tried MSE, SAS and others and they said they couldn't find anything. Tried reg edit recommended somewhere but they failed to work. ![]() No other choice and this is the cure for me: Reinstalled the Vista image from a partition pre-set by the Notebook manufacturer.

I too switched to FF long time back though have to keep IE for office web sites.
Few days back I switched to Chrome as primary browser (always with sandboxie as default) as adblock plugin works better than what it used to be... uninstaller FF till stable v4 comes in. I am long time FF fan, but FF sync stopped working for me with an error in last beta and stable FF is too slow .

if only windows update on xp didn't use IE i'd have it uninstalled. I know i can visit 3rd pt sites on FF to get updates but I don't want to. Though pretty soon, XP won't be updated so at that time I can drop IE. Or pick up a new laptop since I think vista and on doesn't use IE to visit an update site.

i turn on my computer. First i turned off automatic updates and installed IEtab to check for updates manually with Chrome, but still wuauclt.exe was starting up with Windows. Then i went to services and set the windows update service from automatic to manual, rebooted my computer and was very glad to see that wuauclt.exe didn't run at startup, but in vain. When i went to microsoft to check for updates with Chrome got an error message, had to set the service back to automatic. So, if anyone knows a way to stop Windows Update from using IE please let me know. Other programs use IE too, although i have set Chrome as my default browser and although i have "disabled" IE (denied access to the internet). For you who for whatever reason like IE, share your love with these guys here and here. |
