For many users, the installation of a classical HIPS like this can only lead to heartache and frustration unless they have an advanced knowledge of Windows system processes. The same applies to some of the others still around like EQSecure, Realtime Defender and System Safety Monitor.

As always, there are different opinions. Bellgamin is one Wilders member who I have a lot of respect for and he said this about it today:

"Yes it's free. I suppose the new owners of MD know what it's truly worth. Nothing!

Over the past few years I have now bought & paid for 2 HIPS lifetime licenses from that part of the world -- 1 for ProSecurity; the other for Malware Defender -- both of them were $$$ down the toilet.

It reminds me of the time I bought a suit with 2 matching pairs of pants, & then I burned a hole in the coat"

Just because this program passes a few tests at Matousec doesn't make it a must have app. For many people WinPatrol will be a much easier option to manage and understand.
Can't argue with that. However Malware Defender is a good Classical HIPS and now its freeware, and its a very good program for at least a couple of years. Even if its not for the newbie. Prosecurity(Real Time Defender) is still a good product....as are many others, like ProcessGuard, EQSecure, System Safety Monitor, Sunbelt Kiero Personal Firewall, Proxomitron.

Winpatrol is a fantastic program.

I guess the true value of these programs comes down to defining personal need.
It's a bit like the old days of Hi-Fi. If you spent $1,000 on a system you'd probably need to spend at least three times that amount to gain any noticeable improvement in sound quality. Likewise, for many of the population, what's included with their software firewall is plenty good enough but for those erring on the dark side then a big jump in tools is necessary to cover their additional threat exposure.

The MD 2.7 version that is out has a bug, if somebody wants to try it
out you should wait for the official version that will come out soon. If it
was me installing it, I would wait for a while after the release of this
Version just to make sure everything is OK.

Naturally I've run it myself for a while although I don't have it installed at the moment. A tutorial is not really possible for this because there are too many possible variants between users and systems. The only way to accomplish this effectively is to install the program and work with it. At least it has a learning mode which reduces the number of initial alerts although even after that it is quite labour intensive, especially if you chose to enable the network protection.

The thing with WOT is that it can be maliciously manipulated to give a bad rating especially for new sites or those with low traffic. On the other hand it isn't possible to vote a bad site to "Green" this way so as long as one has brain in gear with mouse it still remains a useful tool
