Established on 14th March. XP Pro SP2, AMD Sempron 3400+ (1.8Mhz) and IG memory.
I have included a mix of general freeware in an attempt to create an average environment. I will be using this PC for most of my online and other activities over the next few weeks. DriveSentry is running alongside Comodo CIS firewall (V3.8.65951.477) with Defense+ set to "Proactive Security". I have added some additional rules to accommodate my OpenDNS and block access to unwanted Microsoft services. http://www.opendns.com/ Everything else is at default settings and there are no other (active) security programs. Current average memory use for DriveSentry is 32MB. There was an initial delay with new applications caused by a need to answer the popups but these have now disappeared and there is no noticeable lag in system performance.

Can you tell us more about OpenDNS and why you use it?

Hey guys,
Just a quick bit of advice, hope you don't mind? MC - of course you must mention various sites that are relevant to your security investigations. But could I offer an opinion on the way this is done, please? The reason for this is simple:- if we link to or even have mentions of disreputable sites, then Google, McAfee etc will see us as being associated with those sites. That is the last thing we want, since we are (a) a respectable site and (b) very keen to increase our audience. If we have danger sites and even danger words on the site, we take a big risk. But as I say you need to mention this sort of information. So this is how you do it: 1. Never, EVER, link to one of these sites. And remember - if you put the web address in full, then you HAVE linked to it - the CMS creates an automatic link. This means that you must never put the full web address. Instead, you would write it like this: trashsite.com 2. Because we don't even want the name of that site here, it's best not to do even that, with a known bad site. It's not linked now, but Google still sees this clearly as a reference (for example they will send search queries for that site to us, as they know we reference it). So you must obfuscate the name in this way, using replacement characters and a gap before the domain suffix: tr@shs1te. com It looks weird but it's the only way to ensure that the name of malware and cr@ck sites are not seen as being associated with this site. Otherwise - you can't mention them in any way. 3. Please don't put anything contentious like this in a post title, that's emphasising it way too much... 4. At some stage, if you are involved in security software testing, obviously you need to mention this sort of stuff. Just be creative please, in how you do it. OK? Hope this clears up any confusion or whatever. Christoph - a lot of the guys are sailing a bit close to the wind here, maybe you could put this info somewhere the editors / mods can see it better? chris Last edited by chris.p; 23. Also would like to know what the main difference is (or differences are) between DriveSentry and Threatfire. I've been using Threatfire for years and to date have experienced absolutely no problems. I even ran it successfully alongside Avast on an old Dell machine with Pentium 4 CPU and 512mb RAM....no slow downs, zero issues. Don't get me wrong, I'm neither defending nor advocating Threatfire. It's just that, in light of your reservations and obvious preference for DriveSentry I have been considering changing over and would just like to know more....especially comparison wise. cheers....JIM |
