The update problems really are a worry , but personally I've never had any problems with it myself, on several computers. I guess I'm just lucky.

Also shows that they are not serious about this thing.
Might as well add my 2 n half cents also. Yes, I was using avira for quite awhile but because of the update problems I finally got fed up and went back to avast( 4.8) and I might add, very happy with it. Waiting for the 5.0 version to come out of beta and probably will install that version. Not making this post to bash avira, am just sharing my views on it. Anyone having luck with it(avira) good for them

I've been doing manual updates for the last few weeks, due to this issue. Though not as convenient, it appears to get the job done.

I like to use maximum heuristics, FP's or not. Also, I believe I have the latest version already.
The problem is, that CAV repeatedly labels the same programs as malware, even after a malware submission. Sometimes, the Comodo people says that there were no problems in their testing. Other times, the problems just disappeared. Part of the reason may be because I update frequently, but I think something is wrong with the signatures as well.
Quite a few times CAV just didn't update correctly, and even once slowed my system to a crawl until I had to manually replace everything with the repair folder in Safe Mode.

Still going to use it for on-demand scanning though.

I appreciate what you're saying about the repeated hits. I experienced this too when I was running versions of CIS on XP but learned to live with it. As you say something must be amiss within their processing dept. I haven't had this reoccur since switching to Vista but then I haven't got the same amount of rubbish installed so there's not so much for it to trip over.

Maybe how I'm running my Windows partition is not a true reflection because it's hardly on more than a couple of hours a week, the rest of the time spent with Ubuntu. Perhaps on a system in full time use CIS may still be a bit wobbly but I've not seen this on the forums lately.

Being cynical, and having just got V3 fixed will we be going right back to square one when V4 get's released? I hope not because it would be a shame to spoil the party at this stage and surely they've learned from this last development cycle.

Question Avast-ly improved AV?

After Avira failed to update after a wait of 4 days -this was the second time in a couple of weeks- I have finally ditched Luke Filewalker and installed Avast 4.8.

Although the GUI is a tad confusing it appears to update itself without any problems and is currently scanning my PC as I write this. Hopefully things will work out with Avast unlike flakey Avira!

PS After uninstalling Avira I clicked on the link which took me to their website and once there I gave my reason for ditching their software ie problems with updates. Whether the powers that be take any notice of this is another matter.

I believe you can change Avast's GUI. There's another better one that comes installed with the default media player look-a-like.

I can live with the updating issues, mine updates more than it fails...

Antivir best detection rate, putting false alarms aside...some knowledge on the false detections will get you pass that.

Not ditching Antivir any time soon...
