I agree with wildman... this problem of updating has been an issue for years. I used Avira 2-3 years back, before I started to use Avast. I remember that back then too, Avira had problems updating the definitions. So, its just not a problem going on nowadays. That makes me believe that they want users to shift to their premium version? Also shows that they are not serious about this thing.

I agree with what's said in all of the last three posts. There aren't too many issues to consider. Can't be availability of samples or process time converting the signatures because these guys have their own research lab in Austria somewhere for this exact purpose. Can't be server quota because they could easily increase their hosted capacity or as it's likely to be owned and maintained directly by them just go down to the local store and buy another one
![]() I too am thinking that this is direct strategy to divert custom towards the paid version. If so from a business perspective this is at best short sighted and at worst suicidal. With Comodo improving all the time and (finally) the new Avast! on it's way, ***ing people off now will only kill their ability to retain existing customers and attract new ones later on. Also, we haven't seen the last of what China has to offer yet. OK so Rising's free offering is still pretty average but there are too many people coding stuff in that part of the world for it not to develop into something useful given more time. Avira will soon see many more customers voting with their feet unless they adopt a different strategy and change this around.

Yep, if they think of this strategy to make people buy their premium version, then its a very poor one. No one wants their front line of defense to be crippled. Already we have seen on the forum, and the site... that many people have started complaining about Avira updates. We have seen many people switch over to Avast too. With Comodo AV getting better, and MS Essentials coming into the market with a bang, things can get hard for Avira, if they continue to play with this strategy.
I will be keeping Avast though... the new Avast will contain a firewall too I think. Lots of good things to look forward to its release.

We are lucky. We have several good alternatives to Avira Personal now as detailed by the Antivirus and Malware sections of TSA with more on the way.
The update issue and the lack of information about Avira Proactive does not bode well for Avira. Avast 5 looks very promising and Avast is very open about the progress of their beta product. MSE is performing very well for me personally. There are several good antimalware products that have proven track records out there as well. Yes MC. An Ubuntu Live CD or install is now viable for anyone that wants to put a bit of time into this alternative. No reason to complain about Avira Personal signature updated. Stop complaining and do something about it.

I remember a few times Avira skips the signature updates for a 2 days at most, but never for a week or more. Maybe that's because I haven't kept my free version for long, kept switched back and forth between Avast, the premium versions, even AVG once (far too bloated for me), and Comodo AV.
Recently switched back to Avira, because submitting false positives to Comodo was getting annoying, and Avast's GUI component won't startup automatically no matter what I do. |

The only FP I get now with CIS on my Vista 64 is a component from Code Stuff Starter, even after pushing the heuristics up to medium. Have you tried the latest version because the FP's and the latency issue were two of the big fixes?
