Right, I'll end this one now as the thread's already off track but I've solved my problem with the new Seamonkey 2.0 Beta 1. Uses the Firefox 3.5.1 core, fantastic new default skin, fast, spell check (LOL)
more than enough compatible extensions. This will do me nicely - thanks to everyone for their input

I may have misled you slightly because I realized that my fantastic default skin has a lot to do with my Windowblinds installation. I'm using the VOX theme and this particular one changes the Seamonkey skin quite a bit. There are nevertheless more skins to choose from without having Windowblinds and so far not one crash or any other single issue with Seamonkey.
I did decide though (rightly or wrongly) that the NoScript extensions were maybe the main cause of trouble so I've installed AnalogX ScriptDefender instead which now covers for more than just the browser script execution. http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...d/Freeware.htm
