For things which require discussion, please open a separate thread. Do not disrupt the thread on topic.

Well, sometimes these "mere" suggestions become a big discussion, that's why I thought I would just remind everyone... just in case

-Malwayrebytes - It finds a lot of stuff, gotten me out of a bunch of jams.

-TDSSkiller, and sometimes GMER.

And since I use Windows 7 I make use of the built in Firewall, which is a lot better than anythign else I've used in the past - The best Firewall I used to use was WRQ AtGuard - WHich got eaten by Symantec, and they ruined it.

I try to avoid "Security Suites" and also I completely avoid Microsoft "Security Downdates" - My systems work the best right after I do a fresh install, I try to keeop the system as close to that as possible. That way, it is easy to track down if some Virus changes my system files. Three months ago, I contracted a virus that shut off my Firewall, my IKE, my IPSEC and my Security Center, it took a combination of Yamicsoft Windows 7 Manager, SFC -Scannow, and Foolish IT's D7 to put everythign back to normal - This virus DE-REGGED ALL of my DLL and OCX files! It was amazing, I couldn't just use one program to fix it, it was a combination of the three. Even my printers got messed up. IN the end I had to delete the $Print folder and then I was able to re-install all of my printers.

Default My set up for security.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. I use MSE and Windows Firewall. UAC is turned on, and I'm behind a router. I know I will catch a lot of flack about not having outbound protection, but I believe that if something is trying to send info from my computer, it's too late. The object of security is to keep bad things out so I don't let them in

No flak here! I run a similar system. The only difference is that I use Sandboxie to keep me protected. Oh, I also use Winpatrol, but it's not necessarily for "protection".

Understood! But what about "legitimate programs" trying to "phone home" unnecessarily? There lies the problem.

I have set Comodo firewall to notify me if new programs try to connect. I purchased a game a couple of weeks ago, which connected to the game server and validated my purchase. Good!

Unfortunately, every time I played the game (and I was online), it tried to connect to a server. I blocked the process and so far, nothing has happened. Yes, it might be paranoia from my part (I've got nothing to hide). But I still hate it when a legitimate program does that. Oh well, each to his own....

@ mods: Please excuse for going "slightly" off topic here.

No chance. Anupam will delete this and no doubt all your other 278 posts later (only joking)
This is in fact the very reason why I run a third party firewall for Windows 7. Currently quite impressed with the simplicity of TinyWall.
