I had loads of bovver yesterday which resulted in loss of internet connection ability and Windows 7 driver messages

Could have been either Forticlient (firewall) or Ad-Aware which got upset about something. Tried restore and installing Privatefirewall but the driver wouldn't load.
After using my Linux machine to go online I saw how many firewalls were having similar issues with drivers re SP1 that I just reinstalled a new copy of Windows 7 without the service pack rather than chasing round for a fix.

For this install I've put MSE and Returnil System Safe on together with Privatefirewall and so far smooth as silk. Memory is a bit high, using around 40% of my 4G with a torrent running but only to be expected with two AV's. I'll no doubt take MSE off anyway at some point but I just wanted to run for a while like this to see what happens.
Buy a Hoover and prove technology sucks.

Glad to see that you're still in the Private firewall club MC. The only time that I ever had a problem with Private FW was with Geswall. For some reason I couldn't get the two to work together. However PFW ran well with everything else I tried with it from MSE, Avira, Panda to Sandboxie, B.Z.. etc., nary a problem. With my current setup which I think is a keeper, PFW is also performing great. Knock on wood.

Panda Cloud AV, Prevx SafeOnline, ZoneAlarm, Safe Practices (WOT, Secunia, ClearCloud, HostsMan, Iron, LUA/SRP)

I noticed that SRWare Iron does a good job reducing rights on its tabs according to Process Explorer's list of security permissions (I've been using dropmyrights to get the main tab rights down too). Prevx doesn't work well with it though; the menu disappears occasionally. And Iron also hates our article editor. For some reason it freezes the key functions and refuses to publish changes after a certain period of time.

I don't mind my LUA as much as I once did, but I have problems remembering to use it, so I set an SRP, which I hate. The MMC takes too long to display its prompts.

ZoneAlarm gave me fits today. It kept saying something like "protection on, initializing UI", but then it wouldn't initialize for long periods of time. I see the same bug over in the forum. But it started working after a few restarts. CyberLightning previously had a note about a conflict with it and Immunet in the firewall review. It looks like it has a touchy installer.
Live long and prosper.

With IE disabled how do you update your security software and how do you continue to update W7?

IE has nothing to do with updating security software. Any good security software can update itself automatically. Also I have FreewareFiles RSS and SUMo.

Windows Vista and 7 does not need IE for Windows Update. It is part of the Control Panel.

Removed Spyware Doctor with Antivirus Starter Edition, and replace WOT with LinkExtend.

Avast Free now.

Hitman Pro hit me with a bunch of "suspicious" detections for files with invald digital signatures, including Process Lasso, a few Avast definition & setup files, and a few others. I reported most of them as safe and it had them as default ignore. Now it doesn't detect them, besides constantly trying to upload PDFXCview over my slow connection (not happening). I think this is a new way of reporting detections for Hitman Pro.

Avast, Prevx SafeOnline, Windows Built-in Complete Backup, Hitman Pro, SRWare Iron (+ WOT, dropmyrights), ClearCloud DNS, HostsMan, SRP/UAC (fine with TweakUAC), Secunia

To keep downloads short, testing software under Returnil (2008) and after using ZSoft Uninstaller (for firewalls because of reboots).
Live long and prosper.
