Eset.com's Nod32 was rated strongly last year, but this has apparently changed. Kaspersky is apparently very good and also provides some online scanning, but G-Data is reported as the very best and, if I understood correctly, so good that a person could or even might do away with using a firewall, or some other important security guard. But there's apparently no free version for personal, non-commercial use.
G data maybe reported best in terms of detection but ive heard it slows down pc a lot...and yes it doesnt have a free version...but three commercial versions..antivirus,internet security,total security

Kaspersky was always one of d top contender...though last year and dis year norton are at the top..according to av-comparatives and pcmag
and kaspersky is 2nd
eset is known for its great heuristic capabilities...

and among avast,avira and avg
i guess the ranking would be
1.Avira - excellent detection rates , fast scanning , light on resources
2.Avast - " , " , little more on resources dan avira coz of more added features
2.Avg - avg is just bloatware...

Well Avast! is gone -- it was too annoying with my slow Internet connection and seemed to bring it to a halt at unpredictable intervals. Maybe if I had tried manual updating it would work better on my system, but it didn't seem to stop Avast! from taking over the connection in the short time I tried changing its options.

Now I'm with PrivateFirewall, GeSWall, & DropMyRights for a lighter setup. Looking for AV at the moment. Not happy with any of them!

@Rizar: You can disable Web Shield to stop Avast from taking over your internet connection.

Which AV's have you tried?

@J.L.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try disabling it and see if it makes a difference; I was thinking it was the auto updating feature. The good thing is that Avast doesn't require a restart so I can quickly try it out again. But it will take awhile to tell.

Others I've tried so far:

Avira (Had it for years, but not happy with them ditching v9, and also not rushing to download it again over my slow connection! -- download of last resort for now!);

Panda Cloudy (too slow on my connection and used many more resources than I expected);

I've also looked a lot at lighter alternatives (since I have so much prevention anyways):

Immunet (Not bad, but a bit heavier than Prevx and too many statistics that I don't want to be counted in; also the reason I won't get a Firefox "persona" -- I won't be counted so visibly!);

Prevx: Currently testing again -- also don't like cloud based engine, but better than the others I've tried and finally got it to uninstall without killing my keyboard (possible conflict with Online Armor) -- tried twice under Returnil to make sure -- faster all around, except when it's monitoring new files and seems to slow their load time. It probably won't last since I also jump at the chance to leave the cloud!

Didn't try yet:

MSE (Couldn't download for some reason, the site kept reloading?)

Hai,

I am using Avast as Antivirus and GesWall and Sandboxie. Is it enough to protect my PC. Use internet but not heavily / not visiting malicious site.

Could you please mention what softwares (I mean categories) are required to protect the PC. Why I am asking is I doubt if too many are used, it may affect system performance.

Thank you, binu

@binumathew
It is better to have several layers of protection...
in my opinion necessarily:
- firewall (absolutely!)
- HIPS (for the more advanced user)
- anti-malware (antivirus-antyspyware)
- backup/restore software
additionally:
- some for sandboxing or for virtualization
- some for data encrypting
