When i first got my win7 x64 laptop, i could plug in my head phones and they were recognized by the laptop being inserted and would switch the sound to it. And if i went into the playback devices i could see the realteck driver controlling my speakers. And i was able to access a hidden device, the sound card, so i can record things before they went through my speakers. I had to do a re installation using the backup partition on my HD, since then i have had problems...
Now if i plug in my headphones nothing pops up saying they were inserted, i updated the realteck driver but that caused more problem. When i inserted my headphones they show up on the realteck configuration screen as imputed but no sound comes through them at all when i push test. If i take them out it recognizes that they were removed and plays through the speakers. I rolled back the driver and Realteck gets completly removed and it driver is then controlled by Microsoft recommended driver, and i can use the headphones again. If i update them again, it doesn't suggest Realteck, and if i find realteck drivers to control it the headphones no longer work. But it was initially set up with realteck before i had to re install my system... That's just one problem.. The other problem is since i reinstalled my system i have not been able to find the sound card that is normally hidden. To record sounds before they go through my speakers, I didn't remove any hardware, and in my devices it doesn't show it either, i have scanned for new devices but none show up. so no yellow triangle in the my devices menu. I'm wondering whats changed and gone wrong, i want to be able to record sounds again before they come through the speakers, and i want to be able to use my headphones and the laptop to recognize them when i put them in. I'm wondering if im installing the wrong drivers, but i don't no what to do with the sound card that i can no longer find. Anyone got any advice?

Try uninstalling ALL sound drivers and software (like ASIO, Wndows media player sound plugins, etc etc, or something may interfer) of course, restart system. Go to device manager Install BASIC audio driver from laptop's mobo CD, restart again. If working just then, install High Definition drivers. Hope it works

I looked in safe mode and nothing reported as a problem, I just re installed the system again and its back to normal. Maybe it got corrupted from Microsoft Updates,
I have made a restore point before i install any updates from them, and i will check that its working properly when its finished updating. It may of had a dodgy update. Thanks for the help, I'l report a problem if it happens again after the update.
