Default Software for sound level normalization: any suggestions?

Hi folks,

I want to create an audio CD. The files with music are mostly in lossless FLAC and Monkey’s Audio (.ape) formats. My problem is that those tracks have been taken from several albums and thus have different sound level. Could you please suggest good software to normalize sound level of FLAC and Monkey’s Audio files before burning them to a CD?

I do know one program for sound level normalization (it's called MP3Gain) but as far as I understand it can normalize only MP3 files. What about other (especially the mentioned) audio formats? If you know good commercial programs for the purpose please don't hesitate to mention them too.

Hi Nikita. This is not exactly my area but i believe i do know of an app that will perform this function. Hopefully another editor will be able to answer your question directly but in the meantime i will have a root around and see what i can find. Pretty much any reasonably good media player should perform this function but as you say, not necessarily with these formats. Failing all else, you should be able to load your files into Krystal Audio or equivalent, save them back to .wav and normalize them before you burn and with no significant loss of quality: i will need to see if these file formats are supported. I will get back to you within 24 hours if this issue has not been resolved by another editor.

Have a good one.

One way that comes to mind is to convert all your music files with something like Media Monkey or another converter. I like to use AIMP's Converter and it has an automatic normalizing option. Media Monkey might have more options and make it easier to update tags at the same time, but I like TagScanner best for updating tags. I won't turn it on to check, but I bet Windows Media Player has a similar feature.

If you intend to play the songs on a computer, you could rely on the auto normalizing features of a music/media player for smoothing out differences, but otherwise you could convert them.

For example, you could convert them all to MP3 to save disk space and have the converter you choose normalize them.

AIMP2, Media Monkey, JetAudio, etc:

Not sure if any of these will do it, but you could post a comment here:

Or perhaps CDex:
