Unfortunately I have no experience with Puppy and I guess we all have our favorites. I would say Bodhi and Peppermint

The one distro that made it to my top 3 list for replacing Ubuntu was Mint, PCLinux_KDE and PCLinux_gnome.
PCLinux_KDE was not just pretty but it was exceptional when it came to system resources. It uses the RPM package manager with a large number of utility and apps available. Its a spin off of the Mandriva and Redhat genre. A very good distro which may help broaden your Linux experience.

I too really liked PCLinux_KDE but it had no support for my mobile broadband and I just couldn't be bothered with script this and modeswitch the other to try and get it working.

Actually there are a good number of light weight distro's that will breathe new life into aging computers and laptops. Did a little looking around and came across this website Don't get me wrong Puppy is great but you may get more usability out of a more substantial distro.

Hey........ That was me too, still is
You may recall MC talking about the stacks of live cd's around his desk. Each distro is like a new toy to play with. It don't no matter how old we get we still like playing with our toys they are just bigger or more complicated

Anyway I was faced with a problem because I didn't want to partition my hard drive like a pepperoni pizza so I decided to go with the Virtual Box option. There is a thread on this forum discussing the use of virtual Box from Linux here Give it a look and see if its something you think will work for you. Running a distro with VB has it's limitations because its a bit slower but still good enough to get a feel for how it works. One word of advice, its better to run the .VDI file (virtual file that's used as the hard drive) from a separate hard drive to give better performance. I have 2 internal hard drives so its what I did. I was able to test drive around ten distro's in a couple of weeks this way.

Enjoy
