Persistence i read somewhere today is the ability of a portable operating system on a USB drive to retain changes.
I'm just practicing with the new Katya version of linux mint, and it doesn't even seem to retain that I changed my desktop from the kewl original to my all-time favorite of a completely black background. Of course, if I toy around with Katya on my pen drive, I will eventually get it. But this "General Computer Support" in TSA is just too attractive to resist. How long has "General Computer Support" been at TSA? I just noticed it today! |

I have never tried Mint on a thumb drive. I did have Ubuntu on one but it wasn't persistence capable. I do remember when I set up Puppy Linux I was given an option to make it persistence during install or to save my changes on a hard drive. Where you presented with this option?

LIveUSB offers persistence for Ubuntu and Debian-based distros. I may try it. I have 2GB RAM and a 4GB USB stick. A couple relevant links: "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_USB" "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tools_to_create_Live_USB_systems" Last edited by bibzgi; 18. May 2011 at 04:23 AM. I'm thinking that my unstable version of Mint Katya should be replaced with a stable version of something or another. Right now I'm using UNebootin to install the live 10.04 Ubuntu onto a pendrive, from there to replace the Linux Mint 11 RC (unstable release candidate) with Ubuntu on my laptop just for the time being. Afterwards, I will go back to the aforementioned website. While UNebootin cannot install an OS with persistence on a thumbdrive, it is such a handy program to check out and install new OS's on a computer! Optical media (e.g. CD, DVD) are not nearly as convenient as USB sticks for purposes discussed here. Thumbdrive OS's that have persistence, that run on RAM, that have good encryption...that kind of OS is arguably more secure and private and faster than hard-drive based OS's. I must achieve one! The dirty laundry can wait!

I just remembered something. A couple years ago I had tried to use an older USB drive to boot from and even though my computer was capable of booting off a USB drive I found that the thumb drive was incapable to boot from. Heres a way you can test you USB drive:

In the meantime, I still have no success with an operating system on my USB drive with so-called persistence. I'm trying everything under the sun. I need to give it a rest. If anyone has managed to install a linux os on their pen drive that has persistence, please speak up! Puppy is just too limited IMO. Thanks for everyone's comments.
