There seems to be a limited number of distro's that can be booted in persistence mode. I've been reading up on things and from what I can tell the few that can are Ubuntu and Puppy . Knoppix can but you need a second USB drive. When I google the topic I found this:

I just tried PClinux Mini with no luck. To be honest I'm very happy with Puppy as a matter of fact I'm typing this using Puppy on my thumb drive. Maybe you will have better luck tracking down distros that can be run in persistence mode. Wdhpr Last edited by wdhpr; 21. May 2011 at 04:52 AM. |

Ever since bibzgi started this thread I have been trying different distro's to find out if they can be ran in persistence mode. I know its important to download the exact distro and version shown on this list of installable linux distributions
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/univers...asy-as-1-2-3/# When using the Universal USB Installer to make a bootable thumb drive you should see a slider bar to pick how much space you want to use to save changes. I was able to do this with PcLinuxos-MiniMe. It installed without a problem. However when booting the OS from the thumb drive it stalled halfway and after 15 minutes I gave up. I also tried Ubuntu Mini Remix 10.04 with the same result. I have always used Puppy Linux in persistence mode which has always worked flawlessly. So I'm at a loss to explain whats going on so I am hoping someone who see's this post can offer some assistance. I am also posting this to the pendrivelinux forum. Thanks Wdhpr |

I briefly used Puppy months ago. I tried numerous other pendrive OS's to no avail. I'm back to Puppy.
In the first place, I should have realised that Linux Mint takes up more space than my 4GB pendrive. Oops. Today, I tried Arch Linux and Damn Small Linux without success. So what's wrong with Puppy? It installs easily on a pendrive even via UNetbootin (<- available in the linux software manager). On first start-up, it offers selections for encryption and amount of persistent space. The themes for desktop and menu can be easily changed to personal preferences. Puppy has numerous programs by default and others can be added just like in Ubuntu and Mint. So what's wrong with Puppy? I have a Calico cat that wouldn't stand for another kitty or puppy in the house. I'd better use the cat's picture as my desktop background or else she'll render me asunder with her incredibly sharp nails. Thanks Wdhpr and others for discussing how to have a "persistent" operating system on a pendrive. |

I guess I was spoiled when I installed Puppy. Everything went well during the install and it has since worked flawlessly. I have even updated to newer versions twice with no issues. I went and picked up a Sandisk Cruiser USB drive which is recommended by pendrivelinux. I'll be sure to post back if I make any major progress. Wdhpr |
