Hi all, can anyone tell me if it's possible to boot from a usb HDD? I have a Netbook with 8gig SSD drive and 512meg ram running Linux Linpus. I'm trying to figure out if i can install XP on a usb HDD and boot from the netbook. Any help would be appreciated..

Linpus is a perverted version of Fedora for low spec pc/netbooks.
It might boot out-of-the-box, with some hacking it will...YMMV Give it a try and see...it will or will not, not going to blow-up ![]() Try some Fedora Forum's. |

I don't think lonny read your post completely.
But yes it is possible to install XP on an external USB device an boot it! However, it is fairly technical. I tried once and failed to get it to work with my netbook. The falure may have been due to my particular model, or my lack of ability in following instructions. Be aware that many of those who did get it to work have said it runs pretty slow. I have run across several guides on the net for doing it in the past. You might want to look at these. http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-5928902.html http://www.maximumpc.com/article/ask...or_boot_xp_usb

After reading J.L.'s post it makes me wonder if you are really asking if you can, "install XP on a (external) usb HDD and boot," or if you meant to ask if you can install XP from a USB drive on your internal SSD drive instead of Linpus.
In other words are you wanting to have a portable XP that lives on an external USB drive and will boot any time you plug it in, while keeping the current linpus version installed on your netbook?
