Default Install Linux on notebook

I need to replace the hard drive on my notebook. Can I then get a free (or cheap) disk to install Linux?

Hi,
Can you download Ubuntu Netmix as per the link below or do you need to get a pre-made disc 'cos of hardware issues?

I would recommend installing the regular Ubuntu, not the netbook remix, unless of course you are using a netbook and not a notebook.

It, is your hard drive down completely? I installed Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 on my Toshiba Satellite that had home vista on in and am still working my tail off trying to get all the sound drivers and video drivers to run.. Right now as I type this I am downloading the AMD ATI Drivers so that I can have sound and video. Older units are easier to work with as they have been around long enough to have drivers written for them... But no matter what the flavor you go for you will need to do some real work to get things working again. I am running 4 versions of linux and although I love Ubuntu, I have found for my family that a version of Ubuntu called Simply Mepis is a lot easier for those who have never used Linux to adapt quickly to. I am also running 2 versions of Puppy, MacPup and Seamonkey... I also have one version of Windoze still running just to be able to help those who will never switch.....

Look around read the various forums and put your laptop and model out there and find out who is using what and what they have needed to do..

I have been in this field since the 60's, and even today I still am learning. You will find that if you love to learn, you will love Linux no matter the flavor. Everyday can be another challenge, I love digging and learning, but again I spent 20+ years in the Navy and studied all the time...

Wishin you fair winds and following seas...

Hold on there, SimplyMEPIS is not based on Ubuntu. It was originally based on Debian but soon they changed it to Ubuntu and then back to Debian again, so currently, it cannot be called a version of Ubuntu. Just see the Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MEPIS

Also, Seamonkey is a internet suite consisting of a web browser, email client and etc. Not sure why the name of the puppy .iso file contain the word Seamonkey though, probably just to indicate that it uses Seamonkey as its main web browser.

Yeah, I know. All this naming stuff is a bit confusing sometimes.

I use Crunchbang Linux a lot, but on my Dell I dual boot with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. It's not a netbook/notebook but I like the menu on screen and it works fine in a dual boot with Vista. Have also dual booted Ubuntu /Xubuntu and Mint 'cos I'm a distro hopper!! The _buntus always pick up my wireless & mobile broadband no probs that's why I use _buntu based Linux.
