Email client for Linux

I've Gmail, Yahoo mail, Hotmail and TSA mail accounts, though some are not quite active.

I've been using Thunderbird in Windows and now in Ubuntu Linux, it can receive Gmail and TSA mails. I can't get it to work with Yahoo Mail (unless using a paid Yahoo Mail Plus account) in both OSes, neither can it work with Hotmail, unless you use another client Windows Live Mail (in Windows only).

I came across Yahoo Zimbra Desktop, it says it can work with Yahoo Mail, Gmail, etc., except Hotmail.

Has anyone tried Zimbra? Is Zimbra better than Thunderbird as the former can handle both Gmail and Yahoo Mail?

I briefly tried Zimbra this afternoon. It's quite easy to set it up to work with Yahoo Mail and Gmail.

Even though it has an option for setting Hotmail, but it doesn't work. It says:

User account has been denied remote access from this client. Please check account privileges to determine if a higher level of service is required.

Neither can I get it to work with my TSA account. It says:

SSL connection failure. Please check host and port settings.

even though I've used the same settings as in Thunderbird.

It also lacks the vertical layout option for emails available to Thunderbird. The key advantage of this email client is probably it works with both Yahoo Mail and Gmail.

I get my Yahoo mail forwarded to Gmail to get round problems like this - might be an option for others?
Easy to set up in Yahoo.

That's a good idea, but is it available to the free Yahoo Mail account?

When I click options in Yahoo Mail, it says "Pop and Forwarding" requires an upgrade to Mail Plus.

On Ubuntu I've found Evolution to be superior to anything else but I did get frequent crashes with 9.04. Not tried it since my upgrade to 9.10 because I'm currently looking at 2.0 of Seamonkey. I've always preferred an integrated client and used Opera extensively on Vista because having Thunderbird open used to eat up resources and just bug me. I do like this latest version of Seamonkey though but of course it won't suit everyone.

Who has not been enough of advertisements will subscribe to Yahoo Delivers just for getting POP and Forwarding.

Am thinking of closing Yahoo email accounts and just use Gmail.

That guide shows you how to install Zimbra without telling how to uninstall it.

Zimbra installed with a .sh file through Terminal is not shown in Ubuntu Software Center.

After some research, I managed to uninstall it with two simple steps below:

In Terminal cd to the folder:

--> :~$ cd ~/zimbra/zdesktop

Then enter

--> :~$ ./uninstall

Between Evolution and Thunderbird, I personally prefer Thunderbird which I'm more familiar with while Evolution sometimes is not responding when retrieving my gmails.

Just one issue which demonstrates why it's difficult to wean Windoze users onto Linux.

Having recently upgrared to Ubuntu 9.10 and (sort of) got my USB modem working I started having crashes with Seamonkey. It was a while before I discovered that Karmic still ships with V1.1.17. I had upgraded to V2.0 with Ubuntu 9.04 but somehow this was lost during the upgrade process and I was now stuck with the older version default (complete with known bugs!) Also, since the upgrade my “dodgy” repo addresses are no longer in the Karmic sources list. So, I have to un-install Seamonkey 1.1.17 and all it's Gnome dependencies, search the net for a “dodgy” source for 2.0, enable this in my sources list, update and then drag the new file + dependencies off the web.

Then I discover that this is not the 2.0 final version but an old one!
More hunting through the forums brings up bugs attached to 2.0 final with Karmic so now I'm back to using either Opera or Evolution!

Even considering that a similar set of circumstances were possible with Windows it would have taken less than 2 minutes to remove the old program and/or upgrade to the new. Just one of the frustrations associated with Linux.

Maybe there was an easier way round this but if I don't know it with my embryonic knowledge of Linux then I'm sure many others don't either.
