Kubuntu 9.10

One of the disadvantages of Gnome desktop environment used by Ubuntu 9.10 is that it can't remember the position of the window. I need to drag it from to time to time to the place I want when I open it. To my surprise, it says "the author of Gnome decided that it was not the job of the window manager to determine where windows would pop up".

Kubuntu 9.10 is using KDE desktop environment which seems to have this functionality built-in. It is also an official derivative of Ubuntu.

I've downloaded Kubuntu 9.10 and might want to try it in one way. Or another way is to install KDE running side-by-side with Gnome on Ubuntu 9.10 (sort of turning Ubuntu into Kubuntu).

Which way is better?

It's difficult to suggest the best way forward here because I've read conflicting reports on various forums. Some say running KDE in tandem gives no problems and others say it messed up their system. Just my thoughts but I would run both from the live CD albeit with limited functionality and then make a final choice and install.

Thanks MC for the useful info.

I was trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 after burning it to a dvd, but was greeted with an error which says the partition that I created is not usable. Again I tried to format the partition in ext4 using Disk Utility of Ubuntu, it says max. number of primary partitions reached.

So no luck, the only way now is to install it side by side with Gnome. I'm downloading Kubuntu-Desktop containing 245 files via Synaptic Package Manager, est. time about 1 hour.

Will see how it goes and report back here.

Done with the installation of KDE Desktop. An option is given to use either Gnome or KDE desktop manager (gdm or kdm) upon logging in and either one can be set to default.

Gdm looks simpler and more straight forward, but Kdm looks impressive and more things to play with. Will try them out one by one when I get time.

Most heavy duty linux users seem to prefer gnome. Not trying to be a broken record but mepis and ubuntu are both derivatives of Debian. Mepis use's Kde as well. I never had this resizing problem your experiencing. But then again I dropped ubuntu shortly after trying it.

You did the exact opposite of what I did a few months ago! MEPIS (the Linux distro I'm currently using) uses KDE and I feel like trying Gnome so I install it via Synaptic.

debtboy suggest that I should create a new user account purely for testing purposes just in case anything goes wrong.

Better safe than sorry, adding and deleting a new user is easy,
fixing a corrupted profile isn't quite as easy.

Good point here. After comparing Gnome and KDE briefly, I note that Gnome takes one step less to go the application you want by default setting. Its design is cleaner and easier to use, though it might have some other shortcomings.

Interesting. Just quote what this journal says:

GNOME was the default environment for Ubuntu. There is, however, another very popular desktop environment for Linux called KDE. I highly recommend that you introduce yourself to KDE and that you work with it as well... Try out the GNOME desktop as well. You have a choice with Linux. Why not see what works best for you?"

This is probably where people see the biggest differences within each distro, but any distro can be added to or subtracted from to look like any other distro.

In short, it is good to add and try KDE on Ubuntu 9.10 distro, or add and try Gnome on Kubuntu 9.10 distro.

If that's the case, I wonder why there's so many *buntus... I mean, why can't they just do what other distros do and just use editions like Ubuntu KDE edition or Ubuntu XFCE edition instead of Kubuntu or Xubuntu? I guess that saves typing time and makes it unique.

True. After trying Ubuntu "Gnome Edition" 9.10, I have added the KDE package in Ubuntu and will log in the KDE session, spend more time to try out Ubuntu "KDE Edition" 9.10.

First of all, it has Konqueror, a web browser, file manager and document viewer. In Konqueror browser, it needs me to press Ctrl-M to toggle the menu bar, instead of Alt-key used in IE and FF (with Personal Menu extension), why does it need to be different?
