About one year ago, after tiring of Vista I installed Ubuntu, thus giving me the option of either Windows or the Linux based O/S.

However, it all came to grief when I discovered that I could not connect my Wi-fi enabled LT to the Internet when running Ubuntu. Despite researching on forums and numerous websites I was unable to resolve this issue and finally I regretfully had to give Ubuntu the elbow.

Why is it that such a simple thing as a connection requires Einstein/Hawkins thinking and some?!

I mention this now as I see there is a new version of Ubuntu due out this Thursday and was wondering if anybody knows whether the aforementioned problem is going to be addressed/resolved?

I had a similar experience with 8.10 which required additional drivers, a special script and other adjustments. I wasn't capable of all this so one of the likely lads here set it up for me. As it was I never really got on with that version of Ubuntu and ended up back with XP. When my tech guy set up 9.04 he said it was much easier. In the meantime, here in Rio state the Claro USB broadband has become the preferred method of connection for thousands so everyone knows how to script it. I'm assuming that 9.10 will be another step forward for me at any rate and presumably for more extra-terrestrial connections as well! I'd Google for your setup to see what you can find because this 9.10 promises to be a must have. I already know of one person here who's ditched W7 in favor of the 9.10RC.

Searching forums can be hit and miss sometimes.It seems key words often fail to hit the target of interest.
Linux forums can also be brutal because moderators often have little patience with newbie's

Welcome to Linux. I think Linux is a process ( learning curve required).
I passed on Ubuntu because of driver issues and chose an alternate distro

And of course for support this site is bookmarked on many browsers

I have had the exact same issue with Ubuntu. Up till now, I haven't had the time or inclination to mess with it in spite of tons of help from people on here.

I've just kind of put it on the back-burner for now.

However, clicking on these Ubuntu links has already caused more confusion than clarity! Therefore, I will await further feedback regarding the latest version before plunging headlong into the Ubuntu crevasse of complication!!

I tried both wired and wireless connections on Ubuntu 9.10. Both works.

The devices are auto-detected. On Wifi, I click one of the wireless networks it detects, key in my password, and it connects successfully. The user interface of the Network Manager in this version is much better than the earlier version 9.04.

Other than this, Ubuntu 9.10 also auto detects my LCD screen as Acer X193w and set the right screen resolution, unlike the version 9.04 which needs me to manually configure.

IMO, it is one step forward, and quite a good step for this version.
